Zg Session 33

AveryCoast: During the rest of the trip to Trekhom, Conductor Xorin makes his way through the train, checking on people and asking if they saw anything that might be useful for the formal investigation into the attack.
[OOC] Jack: "I saw a five-headed hydra, does that testimony help?"
AveryCoast: Ha, ha.
AveryCoast: Anything in particular you want to mention to him?
[OOC] ChefBatali: I saw London, I saw France, I saw Oh hey Bree I didn't know you were standing there…
Jack‘ doesn’t have much to say outside of the obvious, just that he tried to help as the hydra was retreating.
ChefBatali was going to go forward and try to help, but realized he had actually left his burner running and had to double back to make sure nothing caught on fire.
Jeremy‘ will mention the bandits that were trying to control the monster and how they picked up their dead before fleeing, maybe descibe the leader a bit since those seem like details most people would have missed.
AveryCoast: Less than an hour after the attack, the train crosses the border out of the Malice Lands and into Drakr. A steel spire rises five hundred feet above the desolate landscape, guarded by a battalion of soldiers and mages.
AveryCoast: The train does not stop there, and over the next few hours it passes through several small cities. At the conductor’s urging, most people do not flee the train. He promises their needs will be better tended once they reach Trekhom.
ChefBatali deftly makes a sandwich for a customer and talks to a nearby guard or the nice lady that does all the entertaining. "OK, so lets pretend I've never been here before and have no idea what that tower was. .."
Jeremy: "Same."
AveryCoast: They tell you that it's a tower that watches the border and helps keep any malice beasts from crossing over into Drakr.
Jack: "Does it work," he asks, somewhat flippantly.
Jeremy‘ will drink to that.
ChefBatali: "What like, loaded up with a bunch of soldiers and wizards? or dies it just blast them on its own?"
AveryCoast: The guard shrugs. "Don’t rightly know. I guess that's what the soldiers are for."
ChefBatali chuckles. "That is less exciting than I was hoping."
ChefBatali gives the guard a hand-blended tea for his troubles. A little sweet, a little spicy, but mostly mellow.
AveryCoast: With perfunctory formality, Malia comes through fifteen minutes outside of Trekhom. Still shocked by the morning’s attack, she asks everyone to please return to their seats. After all that's happened today, she doesn't want anyone to fall prey to thieves hopping on board in the commotion to nick unattended valuables.
AveryCoast: The train approaches Trekhom via a titanic, high bridge that passes over the mouth of a mighty sea. From a distance, you see pollution thicker than in any city you've been before. Huge steel mills churn coal smoke into the air. Gray snow drifts down from the sky, coating every surface in freezing wet grime. The enclave and surrounding railyard lie directly between the city center and the harbor, forcing the whole city to suffer from the smog in the name of efficient trade.
AveryCoast: As the train arrives, night has already fallen and the air is thick enough with snow that you can only make out vague shapes of squat buildings, punctuated by massive towers. Arriving at 6:27 PM, the train is only a few minutes late off the schedule.
Jeremy‘ lets out a low whistle while glancing out the window.
Jack: "Not even a starry night to cap off the day."
Jack: "Well, here’s hoping the enclave has brighter distractions…"
AveryCoast: The conductor sends off an attendee who comes back not much later with several more guards and a well-dressed tiefling, who starts talking with the conductor.
AveryCoast: Several minutes later, the attendees and guards move around, some of them starting to carry away the dead bodies and talk with bereaved passengers, while others direct people off the train towards some investigators with the company.
AveryCoast: All coach passengers are asked to take all of their belongings off the train tonight because new cars will replace the damaged ones.
ChefBatali bustles around, cleaning up the cooking station. "I wonder if they have… Hm. Check the markets later, I suppose." He makes sure he is very presentable before dealing with the investigators.
Stocke didn't have all that much on coach anyways.
AveryCoast: There's lots of rumours going around as you wait in lines. At least some of the passengers that arrived coming the other way from Nalaam seem to be thinking about changing their travel plans for the moment.
Jack: "I feel safer, now. I mean, what are the odds of something catastrophic happening twice in one journey?"
Jeremy‘ glances at Jack, glances at Hilda, promptly starts very loudly fiddling with a pocket watch. "Well, we can always fend it off again worst comes to worst."
AveryCoast: The investigators are especially interested in hearing from Jeremy, Jack, Ananth, and Stocke, of course.
AveryCoast: The Avery Coast Railroad enclave sits within a crenellated wall, just to the north of a much larger conflux of railroads. Eight different railroads that span Drakr meet in a railyard that fills nearly an entire square mile. Hundreds of rail cars are parked along its tracks, and trains roll through the city at least once an hour.
AveryCoast: People are free to come and go from the enclave, but the city does not offer much to the casual tourist. The city has no subrail due to disputes over subterranean property, but small overland rail lines weave between city districts. Older paths underground are also available, cramped for humans but lit with gaslamps and free of gray snow.
AveryCoast: What are your plans for the night?
Jeremy` getting roped into answering questions for investigators!
AveryCoast: Only for a bit!
Jack` is gonna tail his best friend Boone once he can shake the fuzz.
ChefBatali is, ugh, going to keep an eye on Cardiff. Assuming the weather doesn’t kill that plan right out the gate.
AveryCoast: Depends on your rolls, mostly.
Stocke lets the investigators know that he was running the fuck away from that giant monster that attacked the train. Then he had the misfortune of running into ten(?) bandits and had to fight them off.
Jeremy‘ will keep an eye on the lovely new couple, but imagines they still be staying in for the night. Which he is okay with, because outside is gross as hell.
AveryCoast: Damata tells Hilda and Ananth that he heard that Vlendam Heid is going to be speaking in the common theatre in the enclave at 8PM tonight and asks them if they’d like to join him in seeing him speak.
Ananth‘ did what he can to patch up peoples’ wounds, of course.
AveryCoast: The investigators get when info they can about the bandits from Stocke and thank him greatly for helping protect the train from those thieves.
Stocke is waiting for the prep work to be done on the train. Removing peoples valuables, etc. He'll be around to help with repairs whenever they're ready. He's definitely more interested in the front of the train however with all the shooting that happened there.
AveryCoast: Engineer Steeg tells you to come back in a few hours; he points out where the train will be doing the repairs a bit further down the track.
Stocke will end up taking a nap for a while, then. He'll come back for the night shift.
AveryCoast: All of your guys' targets check into the hotel once they get away from the investigators.
AveryCoast: It's easy to follow them discreetly with the crowd.
Jack‘ buys a local paper and reads it, while waiting for his mark to make his move.
AveryCoast: Boone heads out first, shortly after 7:30.
Jeremy` hanging out in the bar near the lobby which this posh hotel most certainly has.
AveryCoast: Perception check, Garrett?
Jack` rolled 1d20+12 and got 9 ( Total: 21 ) for perception
AveryCoast: And Stealth
Jack` rolled 1d20+16 and got 12 ( Total: 28 ) for stealth
AveryCoast: The snow certainly seems to help you hear more than it hurts.
AveryCoast: Boone ends up taking a long smoke break on the northern bridge in the enclave, alone this night. He seems a bit morose.
Jack` plays the world’s tiniest violin.
AveryCoast: Luc and Ottavia head out several minutes later. Perception to follow them in the snow, Jeremy?
ChefBatali has lost the rather distinctive chef coat for some much less impressive but more practical cold-weather clothing. He's waiting outside for Cardiff, to see if his man is going to make a sale tonight.
Jeremy‘ rolled d20+13 and got 17 ( Total: 30 ) for grumble
AveryCoast: And a Stealth check.
Jeremy` rolled d20+14 and got 5 ( Total: 19 )
AveryCoast: They head from the hotel to the bar nearby, Korol Morya.
Jeremy` scratches at the side of his face, shrugs and head inside. He’s been drinking all day since the train attack, there's nothing weird about doing a little bar hopping, Especially if he can get some food here. So he heads inside and rolls up to the bar counter and does so.
AveryCoast: Cardiff ducks out a side entrance a few mintues later, Zane. Perception check to follow?
ChefBatali rolled d20+9 and got 3 ( Total: 12 )
AveryCoast: And stealth check?
[OOC] ChefBatali: sigh. I love you too, Sugar
ChefBatali rolled d20+16 and got 16 ( Total: 32 )
AveryCoast: You follow him, but lose sight for him briefly as the wind howls and throws snow in your face. You barely see him duck into the common lodgings building.
ChefBatali will keep an eye on him through the window for a minute to see if he stays or passes through, but he's not giving up pursuit either way.
AveryCoast: Looks like he's checking in.
AveryCoast: Back at the bar, Bree's already seated at a table by herself nursing a drink when Boone grabs a seat at the bar.
AveryCoast: Which is after Luc and Ottavia arrive, having sat at a table together.
ChefBatali waits until he's headed out of the room before heading to check in as well, getting the room right by Cardiff if at all possible.
AveryCoast: Alright, sure, just takes some of that extra tip money you earned this morning.
ChefBatali is OK with that. And immediately takes an empty glass, puts the mouth up against the wall, and puts his ear on the base. Instant eavesdropping!
AveryCoast: Doesn't seem to be much going on in there. You occasionally hear a page turning.
ChefBatali is nothing if not patient. Either Cardiff leaves for the meet or the meet comes here. Either way Batali is ready.
AveryCoast: Verzubak, the dwarf, is also at the bar, and doesn't seem to be having much luck at getting anyone to gamble with him before he stands up sometime later, raising his glass. "To meeting strangers, and realizing that you only want to kill about half the people you meet!"
Jeremy: "Hey, that's not bad odds!" Raises his glass in response.
Jack‘ suppresses a laugh.
AveryCoast: After a few scattered cheers from the crowd, Boone stands up as well, raising his glass as well. "I know we’ve all had a rough time today, but I just want everyone to raise a glass to my fellow tiefling. He looks a little nervous being out of Danor, so let's show him a good time, ah? Cheers!" He raises his glass in Jeremy's direction.
Jeremy: "I'll drink to that too!" And he does, with a grin on his face.
AveryCoast: Boone then heads over in your direction, Jeremy. "I'll buy you another drink if you want. Good shooting this morning."
Jeremy: "Sure thing." A pause, then he turns to face Boone with a laugh. "Y'know, It hadn't occured to me at the time, but you actually got balls of steel for not movin' out of my way during that, haha. I duno if I could keep my calm that good if I was that close to the action."
Boone: "…not the most pleasant feeling, bullets ripping past you, no. At least you didn't peg me. Hard to tell but I think most of your shots hit? Rumour has it you even pegged a couple of the bandits."
Jeremy: "Yeah. I have a LOT of free time back home and very little supervision around high quality guns…" He shrugs, "So I've got a lot of practise, haha."
Boone: "Must be a nice setup if you could hit things at that distance."
Jeremy: "Oh yeah. They started doing this thing called uh… shit what was it. Rifling or something? I guess they cut little grooves on the inside of the barrel to get the bullet to spin, which helps keep it accurate over long distances."
Boone: "Yeah, like those guns Malia bought for us in Cherage. Yours doesn't seem to be from there, though. Risuri-made?"
Jeremy: "Ayup. Pops runs a factory, so I get to see a lot of the cool shit they're working on before it goes on sale to the public. They're workin' one something like an attachable spyglass to go along with the rifled muskets, which is gunna make tricks like that WAY easier."
Boone looks thoughtful. "A spyglass on a gun? Interesting. I can see how that'd be useful."
AveryCoast: Garrett, Gerald: Perception checks?
Jack‘ rolled 1d20+12 and got 8 ( Total: 20 ) for perception
Jeremy` rolled d10+13 and got 2 ( Total: 15 )
Jeremy: "Yeah. I guess they’re still working out how to get it to like… align properly, and it's kind of hard to tell exactly where the shot's supposed to land though. Last I heard they were talking about something something like carving iron sights into the glass to help with it."
Boone: "Calibration sounds like a bitch, you're right. I suppose some sort of sights on the glass would help."
Jeremy: "Mmhm. Hoping they got a new prototype by the time we get back, but we'll see."
Boone holds out his hand. "Olivert Boone, by the way. I don't think we've been properly introduced."
Jeremy‘ wipes chicken grease off of his fingers with a napkin before giving a firm shake. "Jeremy Smith."
Boone: "I’ll see you around. Let's hope the Border States don't have any enterprising bandits the next couple of days. Gonna find me someone to drink the rest of the night with, since the ladies aren't biting…" He tips his hat to you and heads back to the bar.
Jeremy: "Good luck out there!"
AveryCoast: Luc and Ottavia pay their bill and head out shortly thereafter.
AveryCoast: Following, Gerald?
AveryCoast: Perception and Stealth
Jeremy‘ finishes off the rest of his meal without any particular rush, but will then head out and follow them. There’s a lot of tracks today, they can have a little head start. Bree's probably keeping an eye on him anyway so gotta stay natural. Gives a way to Boone as he heads out.
Jeremy‘ rolled d20+13 and got 11 ( Total: 24 )
d20+14: 3 [Total: 17]
[OOC] Sugarlips: Grand Total: 41
AveryCoast: They take a long route walking around the enclave before heading back to the hotel.
AveryCoast: They get back there around 9:30. Any further plans?
AveryCoast: Boone seems to have found a drinking buddy by this point and they’re starting on the long slide towards blissful unconciousness.
AveryCoast: Bree leaves the bar.
Jeremy: "Gods, maybe it would've been faster just trying to remember the way back on my own." Long pauses. "Or asked for directions." Makes a face, continues to grumble to himself as he heads up to his room. But will keep an eye on the streets from his window.
AveryCoast: Boone heads out around 11, staggering out with his drinking buddy.
AveryCoast: Garrett, Perception/Stealth?
Jack‘ rolled 1d20+12 and got 15 ( Total: 27 ) for perception
Jack` rolled 1d20+16 and got 8 ( Total: 24 ) for stealth
AveryCoast: You hear Boone slur something about finding another place to drink outside the enclave as they stumble out there.
AveryCoast: After several minutes they head into an alley.
Jack` readies himself, his daggers at his sides. He’s ready to pounce.
AveryCoast: Boone pulls out his dagger as the two of them are leaning against the wall to catch their breaths…
Jack‘ springs into action! [Bloodbath]
AveryCoast: Surprise round starts with one standard action, so at most you can charge or RBA unless you just want to move up beside him.
Jack` runs up beside him. "Madam, run! Get help!"
AveryCoast: That’s a guy btw
[OOC] Jack: Whatever!
AveryCoast: Do you want to roll init for yourself or just have the program roll it?
[OOC] Jack: I leave it to the program

AveryCoast: Go!

[OOC] AveryCoast: KO!
Jack: "You alright, sir?"
AveryCoast: So is that ’unconcious and calling the cops' or 'dead as a doornail'?
[OOC] Jack: the former
AveryCoast: Alright.
Jack: "I saw him going for a knife- you aren't hurt, are you?"
AveryCoast: The guy gibbers for a bit. "No, um…are you sure?"
AveryCoast: There's a very nice scarlet knife on the ground beside Boone, though.
Jack‘ gestures to it.
AveryCoast: His eyes go wide. "Oh gods."
Jack: "Please find the local constabulary."
AveryCoast: He scrambles to his feet and takes off.
Jack` takes this opportunity to hide his magicked knife and to quickly search Boone.
AveryCoast: You find his papers and a revolver.
AveryCoast: It looks just like a plain metal revolver.
Jack` will read through those papers.
AveryCoast: Just his identification, Olivert Boone, Danoran, etc.
Jack` frowns. No rings, huh…?
AveryCoast: Just a small earring on one of his ears.
Jack` keeps Boone pinned with a knee while kicking away the weapons.
AveryCoast: He doesn’t look like he's getting up anytime soon at least.
Jack‘ has had a history with suspects somehow magically escaping when he’s not looking, so do forgive the caution.
AveryCoast: The cops show up several minutes later, a couple of guards and someone who looks like a mage. "What happened here? The witness just said something about a knife fight."
Jack: "Yes. This fellow down here pulled a knife on the poor survivor, and I happened to be walking by at the time. The poor lad, pushed up against the wall, with that savage looking thing-" he gestures to the scarlet knife "-glinting in the snow."
Jack: "I shouted caution, when the tiefling turned on me with the blade!"
Jack: "And then, well, I got a lucky hit in."
Mage: "Alright. Come with us to the station for questioning and we'll sort this out."
Jack‘ straightens up, nodding. "Sure thing, officer."
AveryCoast: They take you down to the station and question the witness a bit more as well before getting back to you. Do you tell them anything else?
Jack` doesn’t change his story, stressing how he shouted at them first, and how the knife was then brandished at himself, forcing him to retaliate in self defense.
AveryCoast: Alright. They let you go and commend you on stepping in to help that poor man before things got too bad. One of the guards claps you on the shoulder, stating that something that 'lucky hit' was placed a few nicely positioned strikes.
Jack: "Really? With all the rush of battle, I wasn't really thinking…"
Jack: "Sorry for the inconvenience, officers."
Guard: "Sure, sure. You're leaving tomorrow with the train, right? Make sure it stays that way."
Jack: "Understood, clean and clear."
AveryCoast: Alright, Stocke. When you're heading back down to the train to take a look at it, someone calls down to you from a low rooftop nearby. "You there! You helped keep those bandits off the train, right?"
[OOC] AveryCoast: No Sam, I haven't forgotten about you, he still hasn't moved
Stocke glances up at them before nodding. "Yeah, that was me."
[OOC] ChefBatali: that is 100% OK, Aleith. I am in fact still here and paying attention haha)
AveryCoast: The man on the roof appears to be wearing a patched-up jacket over some clothing. "Good job. I didn't like my odds if they got over to my car, but you did pretty well against the lot of them."
Stocke isn't entirely sure how he's being recognized since that guy isn't the conductor and everyone else in that area was dead but he nods regardless. "Not well enough. I didn't capture their leader."
Mapple: "You can call me Mister Mapple. I think you did pretty well against 9 of 'em. You had something helping you too. Some kinda…animal doesn't seem right."
Stocke: "A golem, yes. I made it myself. It does most of the fighting. Not to be rude, but I am helping out overnight with the trains repairs tonight. I'm glad that your cargo was safe." He never was very sociable.
Mapple: "Wouldn't want to keep you then. Have a good night!" He gives you a mock salute and heads off across the rooftops.
Stocke salutes back.
AveryCoast: When you get down to the train, they're in the middle of switching out the damaged cars. It takes a bit, and then when they're done they get you to help look over the engine for any damage.
AveryCoast: It's not until midnight when you hear more activity from Cardiff's room, Zane.
AveryCoast: Time for your perception check to follow him as he leaves the hotel.
ChefBatali rolled d20+9 and got 6 ( Total: 15 )
Stocke is going to stick around for the night. After he's done his rounds he mostly idles around the front of the train. He takes a few notes.
[OOC] ChefBatali: baby please why ;_;
AveryCoast: You had to scramble to chase after him after four hours of downtime, and it looks like he caught you by surprise-he slips away into the snowfall before you catch up to him.
ChefBatali sighs. "Gods damn it."
ChefBatali heads out to get some sleep before going to work in the morning. Stupid snow.
AveryCoast: And night deepens over Trekhom…
