Mana P5y1s12

Mana: And so it was written: Pokiehlember 5th, Year 1, Dryad's Day. Million Square - shining brightly in the fading light of the day, the blazing neon lights of Wisp all around.
Mana: There's a weird tension in the air - the crowds a little thinner, the youth hunched a little further underneath the fur-lined collars of their coats as they walk about, from bar to bar, cafe to cafe, boutique to boutique.
Toth brushes his hair back with his brass hand, curiously glancing about. "(Guess the mood dipped with the sun.)"
Toth returns his hands to his pockets and continues along the street, heading for the Fountain of Spirit.
Alexander slips in beside Toth. "Looks like I missed my shot. Mind if I join you?"
Toth: "Feel free. Even walking amongst Wisp, one can't be too careful." He grins. "Not that I've much to fear."
Alexander: "Probably not."
Mana: The Fountain of Spirit - the glass shrine to Wisp.
Mana: Deathjester is seated on a bench across from it, lost in contemplation.
Toth pays the man no midn for now, walking up to the fountain. Across a small bed of water, is it? Or can he reach out and touch it?
Mana: A small bed of water. You'd need to climb in to touch the fountain, wade across the pennies that fill its bed.
Toth hops out of his shoes and removes his socks- not that this'll do a whole lot for his pants, but whatever.
Toth: "Oh, the trials I suffer. Before I do this, though- you wouldn't happen to know the location of the Wisp Temple, would you Alexander?"
Alexander: "I believe it was somewhere in the Hall of Marble."
Toth snorts and puts his footwear back on.
Toth: "That was almost silly."
Toth: "I'm grateful you're not Theodore."
Alexander tilts his head slightly. "What do you mean?"
Toth: "It means he'd let me swim if I was so determined, before revealing the truth." He hums a tune, augmented by the [Song of the Spirits], a twinkling lullaby oft repeated by wind-up music boxes adorned with carosels and ballerinas.
Alexander: "Ah, so."
Mana: No spirits here.
Toth: "I think I'm a little disappointed, though."
Alexander: "Why? It makes sense for them to build the court beside the Wisp Temple."
Toth: "Well, no-"
Alexander: "I fail to see why you're disappointed that it's in the most logical place for a temple to Wisp."
Toth: "Just that- if the story behind the fountain is that there's a spirit that protects it, I was wondering if I could coax out said spirit, even if not the Wisp spirit."
Toth: "I suppose I'd really have to break it for the spirit to show up."
Toth: "Overturning rocks in the pursuit of myths."
Alexander: "Please don't. It'd be a shame to destroy it, unlike the Salamander Gate."
Alexander: "Although if you wish to risk a mythical sprit's wrath, who am I to stop you?"
Toth nods. "I'm not -that- bored. It's also not like we've a lack of enemies," he replies, before turning on a heel, heading for the Hall of Marble.
Alexander: "Very true," he says, folowing Toth.
Mana: The Hall of Marble.
Mana: This enormous, glass-ceilinged building is the center of civil law in the city - its great wooden doors stand broad and open, welcoming all up its steps, even at this late hour.
Toth looks about. How many is 'all?'
Mana: Just inside, there seems to be a market still in session - people selling lots and lots of different things, furniture, handicrafts, preserves, fresh baking, and so on, all on whatever sorts of stalls and blankets they brought in.
Mana: A lot of people seem to be sleeping the night here, too.
Toth: "I'm not often a visitor to the courts, is this kind of thing usual?"
Alexander shrugs slightly. "The market, yes."
Alexander: "The court at the other end is supposed to open occasionally though for new cases."
Mana: And yes - far on the other side is the court proper.
Mana: …There's a long line in front of it.
Toth nods, and eyes the long line. "Time to exercise Jinn authority."
Toth heads toward the court's doors, skipping the entire line.
Mana: "H…hey! What's the big idea!"
Mana: A particularly fat businesscat says, aghast at the lack of propriety.
Alexander holds up his gold pass. "We're making our way through."
Toth: "Unofficial-official business."
Mana: "Tch!" But he lets you cut ahead.
Mana: Inside the court-room…
Mana: A minor court official is doing his very best to keep up with some sort of case - he's piled volumes upon volumes of case law all around himself, and is flipping through them frantically.
Mana: Sitting on the attorney's bench appears to be a monstrous, emerald-scaled serpent.
Mana: On the bench opposite, a supplicant is infuriated: "Matters are very clear here. If the pension doesn't come through, our family won't be able to support ourselves."
Mana: "The plague is scything through and the neighborhood is nigh-gone."
Mana: The serpent, who does not seem to be paying attention to the case, snorts.
Mana: There's a paper-sealed doorway behind the judge's bench, up a short flight of stairs.
Mana: It's elaborately decorated.
Toth: "Where's the plague running through, if you don't mind my asking."
Mana: "Getting just awful in Salamander."
Toth sighs through his nose, making his way past the judge's bench.
Mana: "H…hey!" The official says. "No one can get through! There's a Quarantine in effect!"
Alexander: "Not our concern."
Toth: "Stay here, you'll be fine."
Toth cuts through the paper.
Mana: Slice. It falls apart.
Toth adjusts his cufflinks and enters. [Rosenghost -> Millienium Price]
Mana: Inside…
Mana: The Judge's Chambers. Marble hallways and water fountains - a sitting room, a small kitchen, a bedroom. This is… someone's house. At the end of the hall, a small shrine to Wisp, who bears a crystal orb in her hands.
Mana: And -immediately-, out from one of the rooms, stomps the Judge, dressed in her robes of office - tall, imposing, and a quail-like lock of hair pointing upwards from her bangs. Her fingers are covered with manifold golden rings, and she carries herself like a crusading knight.
Mana: "YOU - … have just broken the quarantine. Alexander, yes? Assassin?"
Alexander: "Greetings, Judge. We should be fine."
Mana: "I don't doubt." She says, with a huff. "It's been five days. Tell me what I've missed."
Alexander looks at Toth. "Where do we start?"
Alexander: "Goblins, fiends, a giant iceberg in Undine, the Salamander Gate's broken, Vush is gone…"
Mana: "The icepickmen haven't resolved it?"
Alexander: "They're on strike because someone assassinated one of their girls."
Alexander: "Not sure who did it or who ordered it."
Mana: "Was it the Emperor?"
Alexander: "Not according to him."
Mana: The Judge turns her palms upwards, gesturing to Alexander, then moves on.
Mana: "Vush is dead gone or Vush has left gone?"
Alexander: "Left through the gate."
Alexander: "There's also a giant fortress in Shade now."
Mana: "Belonging to?"
Alexander: "Lady calling herself Millions."
Mana: "Rebel faction?"
Alexander: "No, that's in Salamander. A couple of rival groups, one of them with assistance from the Moon Kingdom."
Mana: "Great. Fiends in the streets or merely in the Palaces?"
Alexander: "The priest from the Moon Kingdom is Sezaya Yesketi. The Fiends have mostly been concentrated in the Palaces."
Mana: "You'll be clearing the one through here, I imagine?"
Alexander: "Scouting, at least. Might have to come back later to do a full clear. Half of the group's on the Moon right now."
Toth awakens.
Mana: "Right."
Mana: "Well, I need to bring some order back here."
Alexander: "The line outside is pretty long."
Mana: "Once things have calmed down a little, call on me for any necessary consultation."
Toth: "It'll be done. Don't cough on anyone, they're a bit worried about the plague."
Toth: "…-is- your health well?"
Mana: "Perfect. The idea was to protect me from them."
Alexander: "I should mention that Millions is probably antagonistic towards the empire."
Toth: "The execution wouldn't have really worked, it's creeping about here and there."
Toth: "Also the Emperor has started full-scale Ironclad production, so… there's that, too."
Toth: "Mostly with those looking for a cure to the plague, which works in a manner of speaking."
Mana: "I see…"
Mana: She slams her fist into her palm.
Mana: "Anyway. Court's in session. Catch you later."
Mana: She swirls her cloak and heads out.
Toth: "Be seeing you."
Alexander: "Later."
Toth nods to Alexander and heads past her, to the shrine.
Mana: A tiny crystal orb.
Toth: "…wasn't there something about orbs elsewhere in Titania?"
Alexander: "I haven't encountered them, but…they were in the Salamander Temple I heard?"
Alexander: "Hit it with a Wisp spell?"
Toth points a brass finger at the orb and there's a kazoo-like sound as Magic Lore meets Last Striking of Creation's Orchestra ~ Da Capo Aeternam.
Mana: It shines blue!
Mana: A new door slides open in the hallway with a grinding of stone.
Toth: "Here we go. Hope you're not weak to Wisp." He draws the Nightbound and moves through the new door. [Statesman's Sword -> Nightbound]
Alexander: "Thankfully, not today."
Mana: It leads to a small metal room, with a lever on the door. A glass window on it looks out at a long, steeply angled shaft.
Alexander takes a look out the window.
Toth looks down, checking for trap doors, because it could be that instead of an elevator.
Mana: Nope. Looks like an elevator.
Toth pulls the lever.
Mana: A yellow emergency light lights up, flashing, as the elevator descends through the shaft.
Mana: It descends deeper and deeper, away from the Hall of Marble, down…. to a tremendous steel room, cloaked in fog.
Mana: A bright white pathway, flanked by blue floorlights, leads through an archway.
Mana: White pillars flank.
Mana: The Wisp Palace!
Toth enters, walking along the path. He makes no effort to conceal his footsteps, his boots clack, clack, clacking against the ground.
Mana: Inside: The decor is a little reminiscent of the Tower of Jinn - glass walls and shining floors, though done up in white and blue instead of amber and green.
Mana: Along the hallway in, phantom lights flash across the glass walls - some sort of timer counting down, lists of names…
Mana: Diagrams of the positions of stars…
Mana: Two staircases spiral up to wings on either side, or an archway leads straight forward.
Mana: A calm voice speaks: "…Intruder detected. Forcing an encounter…"
Toth: "Yes, yes, come along now."
Toth is moving for the staircases while the temple gathers itself.
Mana: Two pillars of light shine down onto the room from the ceiling above - one leaves a small, blue lizard with a curved crest on its head hopping about, the other an oxheaded beast-man carrying an axe.
Mana: They charge!

Mana: Poto begins casting Heal…
Mana: …But Alex is out of there!
Mana: Anyway, the monsters sort of just start milling about a little after you two escape back into the elevator hall.
Toth: "Embarassing, but it happens. There's no mincing about with these monsters."
Mana: "Encounter ceased."
Mana: …The voice says.
Toth heads for the elevator. "It's high time I hit the hot-springs for the day."
Alexander: "At least I haven't visited the Hot Sp-yes."
Toth: "…so, what are we to do about the investigation in Undine?"
Toth flips the lever as he talks and as Alexander gets in.
Alexander: "I'm not sure. We'd have to find out who did it or who ordered it. The Emperor didn't know about it."
Mana: The light flashes. The elevator slides back up.
Toth: "Where do your orders come from, anyway?"
Toth: "Or, well, where did they come from."
Toth: "(Do? Still on the payroll?)"
Alexander: "(Not really sure, haven't received any orders since then.)"
Alexander: "Fuller usually got them for me, but they were from a room in the tower."
Toth: "Sounds like a start."
Toth: "But, I mean- who's in the room?"
Toth: "Who does the room answer to?"
Alexander: "It's been a while. Let's take a look."
Toth: "Is the emperor the final sign-off to all assassinations?"
Toth nods.
Alexander starts heading for the Moon-Reading Tower.
Toth follows.
Mana: The Moon-Reading Tower is full of Ironclad. Moreso than usual.
Mana: It's all amber glass and shining staircases, the elevators gently gliding away.
Mana: You overhear a conversation:
Mana: "Regardless of the report, the Emperor is not to be bothered tonight for any purpose." "Wh…what? Why?"
Mana: "it's a Holy night! He's not to be interrupted!"
Mana: And eventually - after asking one of Alexander's old assassin compatriots - you can head up to the Order Processing Room.
Toth follows, and paranoidly keeps looking about himself.
Alexander leads the way, knowing the tower at least somewhat better.
Mana: Upholstered in blue velvet, the Order Processing Room is full of tiny cubbyholes, most of which empty, all of them nameplated with the various assassins. In the center of the room, its arms extending towards all of them, is the Master of Orders, who is, essentially, a giant arachnid.
Mana: "Good evening." It says.
Mana: "No new orders for you, Master Alex."
Toth nods. "Evening."
Alexander nods to it. "Good evening."
Mana: "You are here to inquire about another matter?"
Alexander: "We're performing a bit of an investigation on unofficial-official orders from the Emperor, may he live forever."
Mana: "May he live forever." The Master of Orders says, with a nod, a blink of his many, many eyes.
Mana: "I would be happy to assist."
Alexander brings out the writ he received from the Icebreakers. "I need to know about this order."
Mana: He extends a leg to look at it.
Mana: "That one's from the Emperor's own hand. And the assassin assigned it has not yet returned."
Mana: "I assumed it had failed."
Alexander: "Who was it assigned to?"
Mana: "Master Yemel."
Mana: "Always one of our best."
Alexander: "Ah. Apparently, he was successful."
Alexander: "Whether he survived or failed to report on it, I am unsure of." He ponders for a bit, on 'Master Yemel'. [Master Hunter]
Mana: "I shall keep that in mind." The Master of Orders says.
Alexander motions to Toth to follow him out after he takes back the writ. "Thank you for the information."
Peter: "You are welcome."
Toth nods again to the 'arachnid' and follows Alexander out.
Peter: "Good fortune with the investigation, Master Alex."
Alexander nods again before heading out.
Mana: The hallway, just outside.
Toth: "(What's the word?)"
Alexander: "(Emperor never signed it, like I said before, so it's an excellent forgery. Also, Yemel…)"
Alexander: "(He's in the iceberg.)"
Toth: "(Is this 'Yemel' person someone of particular importance?)"
Alexander: "(A pretty good assassin.)"
Alexander: "(Been around for a long time.)"
Toth: "(Can you tell if he's alive or dead?)"
Alexander: "(Unfortunately, no.)"
Toth nods. "(Regardless, we're going to end up going there sooner or later.)"
Toth smiles. "Hot springs?"
Alexander: "Certainly."
Toth heads for the hot springs!
Alexander frowns.
Alexander: "(It's strange, actually. It feels like he's neither dead nor alive.)"
Toth: "(That's… odd, no matter how you slice it.)"
Alexander: "(Indeed.)"
Mana: At the very least…
Mana: It gives you something to think about, while you relax in the springs.
[OOC] Mana: HP and MP are filled.
Peter: And so it was written.
