Mana P3y1s06

Mana: And so it was written: Pokiehlember 3rd, Year 1, Luna's Day. The backside of Gnome - like a strange, tiny scar on the city - is quickly forgotten as one passes back towards the center streets, the whirl of fabric, the dashing of feet through the avenues and along the walkways, the scent of roasting meat, the drifting of various smokes.
Mana: It still seems a little strange that such a ruin could exist, so close.
Mana: But I think our gaze now rests on the little bathhouse at Turtle Springs, the stairs outside it, where stone lions stand vigil.
Toth steps from the bathhouse and down the stairs. "…so you see, there's an awful lot of killing that needs doing."
Rigo emerges, towelling his hair dry with his long sash. Who knew it was so multifunctional? "There is always an awful lot of killing that needs to be done. The trick is figuring out who."
Rigo: "Because honestly, 'everybody' is almost always the wrong answer."
Xsaieta lashes his freshly-dried and fluffier-than-ever tail back and forth- he sort of casually draped the towel he'd been drying with over himself so he could gesticulate while he talks- "-well, yes, that's why Mr. Toth is good to have around." Where'd he come from? Seems he's been here for a while, since the unpleasantness with Frenzy some time ago.
Wilhelmine stands up from her seat on the stairs. She deigned not to freshen up - the fish from earlier barely scratched her. "And I've already figured that out. There exists a magic in the deep Shade, sealed away in the Stone Ocean, guarded by who knows what."
Rigo: "Soon we'll know what, I suspect."
Xsaieta: "He's very, very good at knowing whom I need to kill." He gives Wilhelmine a pleasantly surprised wave!
Toth: "Oho, so it's magic, we're after. I can only guess that it being Calaverite is too much to ask."
Rigo laughs. "I swear, I thought I was going to have to hit you with a rock to distract you from those earrings. You have no poker face, my friend."
Wilhelmine: "This particular magic is how Erinee controls Vush's fate. And, we can use the spoils to fund some purchases at the Last Auction."
Wilhelmine: "Two birds, one stone. Yes?"
Toth laughs at Rigo. "I wasn't concerned about the attendants." He then looks to Wilhelmine.
Xsaieta: "Ooh."
Rigo takes a pull at his wine gourd, thoughtfully refilled with a simple rice wine at the hot springs. "Mm, sounds like a plan."
Toth: "And at least one literal part of the metaphor."
Toth: "I like it."
Wilhelmine: "Unintentional."
Toth: "Oh, but I have every intention."
Wilhelmine turns around and waves. "In any case."
Toth: "I'm curious as to what it is." He follows.
Xsaieta: "How'd you-" -and then he squints at Wilhelmine and glances between her and Rigo and Toth for a minute, and gets a 'Shade, huh?' expression on his face for a moment before sauntering off after her.
Rigo: "Lay on your duff… Oh wait, not in the hotsprings anymore. After you."
Mana: Through the city - to the gate of Gnome.
Wilhelmine snaps, points forward, and tromps down the way.
Rigo waves at the gate guard. "Any goblins today?"
Mana: He nods. "They seemed a little lively today. Must be up to somethin'."
Toth: "Were, at least. But I get the idea they bounce back quickly."
Xsaieta raises his eyebrows, like, let me tell you about goblins.
Rigo: "How's it look now?"
Mana: "Well… they bounce back quickly."
Wilhelmine: "So we'll bounce 'em back down."
Rigo: "Mm. Guess we're going outside anyway."
Xsaieta: "Does that mean… that you could use one as a super ball? I've honestly never tried that."
Wilhelmine: "Yes."
Mana: Somewhere, opposite the way you're headed, along whisper causeway, there's an echoing fluting noise, as the wind rips over some cavern mouth somewhere.
Mana: It gets quieter as you head deeper, deeper still, down spiralling highways in the luminous gloom.
Wilhelmine gives Xsaieta a deadpan look after her response. Go on, ask her about her paper on the relationship between elasticity and kilomilligoblin composition.
Xsaieta just brightens up his face. "That's -awesome-. That you know that, I mean. And that it's possible. You throw most things at the floor with great force, and they just…" -and he makes a horrifying little 'squelch' noise, ears drooped.
Rigo: "They do that when she kicks them down, too. Dont' let her fool you."
Wilhelmine: "Fish get more distance, for what it's worth."
Xsaieta: "I'll keep that in mind."
Mana: …You pass the entrance to [Hexagon Land]. An unearthly chill flows out of it - as, well, always. But the highway continues further down.
Rigo: "More hydrodynamic."
Toth goes ahead and unslings his bow, carrying it in one hand.
Wilhelmine: "Bone composition, actually, I suspect."
Rigo: "If you want to take all the mystery out of it, sure."
Wilhelmine inspects the map from Erifee to make sure they're on the right path.
Mana: It seems you are. The Forest of Monuments - whatever that is - should soon present itself.
Mana: And in the mist of the Shade, it comes into sight - a street corner of flickering lamp-posts, sheltered underneath an enormous, toppled tower, which rests on the far cavern wall. A wind-mill, in front of it, slowly turning, creaking. A pile of statues, beyond it.
Rigo walks along using his Spear as a walking stick. [Default Equipment changed]
Mana: …Is this some sort of junkyard for buildings?
Rigo: "Interesting place."
Toth: "Never been here before?"
Rigo: "Not that I can recall. For what that's worth."
Xsaieta follows behind at a few paces, tail lashing back and forth. The Shade's never exactly sat well with him. "I'm not sure why that windmill thinks it's okay to still be turning."
Wilhelmine: "Do you want to go and correct it?"
Rigo: "I'd leave it be." A small smile. "There is a certain virtue in stubborn persistence."
Mana: Through the shattered brow of a bronze statue, a pair of beady red eyes blink at you. Then the rat scurries deeper into its nest with a rustling.
Toth: "It'd be okay if there was a breeze, right?"
Xsaieta peers up at the windmill with a little bit of implacable hatred in his expression, but only a little bit… and then shrugs fluidly. "…effort. Unless it winds up on the list of things which need killing, in which case…"
Xsaieta: "…well, yeah. Obviously."
Rigo: "Maybe if we made it spin upside down and backwards."
Toth readies himself, raises his left hand towards the windmill intently…
Toth pauses.
Toth: "Hmm… nope, I've got nothing." He continues on.
Xsaieta: "It's okay."
Rigo takes a drink from his gourd.
Mana: The bow of a ship sticks out from a wall of shattered foundation and black stone.
Mana: A rusted staircase descends into it - this is, it seems, the way forward.
Wilhelmine: "Turning is still at least in the realm of plausibility. Slightly eerie, but eerier possibilities exist. It could talk. Tap-dance. Not shrink across the horizon as we move away from it."
Toth tests the ship's resilience by putting a hand on it and pushing.
Xsaieta: "Isn't it better to kill them while they're still young, though?"
Rigo: "For certain definitions of better, perhaps."
Mana: Brittle rust flakes away. But it seems to hold, Mr. Toth - a permanent part of the scenery.
Wilhelmine: "Let's not disturb the windmill ecosystem. That's why it's turning - to maintain the balance."
Toth descends.
Rigo follows Toth down the stairs.
Xsaieta looks like he was going to keep going with this, but… "I get it."
Wilhelmine shrugs at Xsaieta and continues down.
Mana: The other side of the ship's hull - shattered open - opens up onto black sand.
Mana: This cavern is lit from far above, by glimmering, crystalline light, a deeper, richer blue than Gnome's.
Mana: Huge black mesas, round, smooth and flat, with slight bands of red stretching across them, stretch high up towards the subterranean heaven.
Toth: "Oh my."
Mana: Stretches of colorful rock - coral? - grow in shelves around the base of the mesas, mingling with urchins and cavestars.
[OOC] Mana: The Stone Ocean].
Rigo smiles. "This is much better."
Xsaieta: "I am… distinctly okay with this place, yeah."
Toth: "It is… bizarrely beautiful, in an alien way."
Toth: "Does Luna…" He stops his sentence. "I don't even know if I could form the question."
Mana: There's a crackling in the crystal, far above, and in the distance, it twists and extends, dipping down towards behind one of the mesas like the world's slowest bolt of thunder.
Mana: Shimmers in the air slough off of it in waves.
Xsaieta gives Toth a mysterious smile that, somehow, answers the unspoken question.
Rigo whistles softly, takes a drink of wine.
Mana: …A vast place. Navigation 70, as you proceed?
Toth: "So… where to, now?"
Rigo: "An excellent question."
Wilhelmine knows where. Even amidst the alien geography, it was Erinee who placed it. It can't be too hard to trace her steps. [Focus: Wilderness]
Wilhelmine rolled 1d100 and got 12 ( Total: 12 ) for 90
Mana: Certain places, certain tangles, that suggest confluxes of power. Geometries. Morphological resonance.
Mana: …But on the way there, you pass the finger of crystal that stretched down to the black-and-white sand far below.
Mana: It sheathes the ground in a coating of needled, frost-like rock, imprisoning, fossilizing the floor-life below.
Mana: The shimmers detatch away from it, forming blobs of distortion in the air, shaped a little bit like shambling thumbs. Two black eyes blink open on each of them, floating in mid-air.
Mana: …Monsters.
Toth: "If I have to fight these things, I'm definitely poking at the crystal base afterwards."
Rigo: "Ruining a perfectly good stroll."
Toth: "Have to get some kind of salvage started!"
Mana: An opportunistic jellyfish, with ridiculous, crimson eyebrows floats up from somewhere nearby.
Mana: (Kinship among monsters is a beautiful thing.)

Mana: There's a chill in the air, here. But where the edges of the mesa are worn, it suggests someone traveled through here.
Mana: A trail leads ahead.
Wilhelmine: "You don't think this place sees travelers often, do you?"
Rigo: "I would imagine not."
Toth: "Luna travellers, maybe. And Ms. Millions certainly did."
Wilhelmine: "She did?"
Rigo: "She gets around, tht broad."
Xsaieta: "But what a place for a trip."
Wilhelmine glances at Toth. She doesn't remember hearing of that.
Wilhelmine: "Erinee. Erinee is the one who travelled here." She shakes her head. Try to keep up, man.
Toth: "You don't remember? She couldn't get through the harbor."
Toth: "So she came up through the deep Shade. If this isn't part of that, then what is?"
Toth: "Said killing fairies through Luna was easier than the port authority."
Mana: There's a pool of water, here. Shaped like a long grave. The sand all around is white.
Mana: Four flagpoles are planted in a broad perimeter here.
Mana: Blue flags fly from them.
Wilhelmine: "Well, maybe through the ocean. But I think she missed this."
Mana: At the bottom of the pool, immersed deep in icy water - tied down by pitons hammered deep into the sand:
Xsaieta: "Rather different port authority to deal with, here, yes."
Mana: A white pelt, a wolf carcass.
Rigo looks down, rubs his chin.
Rigo: "I am not drunk enough."
Rigo takes a long, looong pull from his gourd.
Mana: If one looks carefully down, Rigo:
Mana: Two sets of footsteps depart the pool, but only one arrived.
Rigo: "… Oh dear. This is going to be complicated."
Wilhelmine: "Elaborate."
Rigo: "One pair of footsteps in, two pair out. Vush may, literally, be more of a beast than people suspect."
Toth: "What, exactly, -are- we looking for?"
Toth: "Aside from 'magic,' in the general."
Wilhelmine: "Heh. Hell if I know."
Rigo takes another pull. "Wilhelmine, you can do better than that."
Toth shakes his head. He lept too easily into this 'plan.'
Xsaieta gives Mr. Toth a look. (It's… sympathetic, more than anything else.)
Wilhelmine: "What? I came out of curiosity."
Toth hops on down into the grave.
Rigo: "Mm." He caps the gourd and drops into the pool.
Mana: Brisk as hell, Rigo.
Wilhelmine drops down as well, glancing back at Xsai.
Mana: The wolf's maw is sharp - the carcass' expression is snarling, beneath the bonds. Eyes long gone, but many-fanged. Its claws are hooked - barblike, almost.
Xsaieta shrugs and jumps into the pool. He prefers the hot springs, really, but sometimes it takes all kinds.
Rigo starts looking to loosen the pitons.
Mana: They come free, soon enough - the last ones easier once the first ones are undone.
Mana: The pelt floats.
Rigo swims up and drags it out of the pool.
[OOC] Mana: Vush's Pelt - 75 S.HP - Grants the form of the Red-Lamped Beast.
Wilhelmine paces. Was the carcass it? There must be more.
Toth climbs back up and out.
Toth then goes over to inspect the base of the crystal spire that's crashed into the ground.
Mana: You almost wish that you could climb out of the water into the sunlight. But the crystal-light from above offers no warmth at all.
Mana: The crystal finger that stretched down from the ceiling cloaked the sand for eight feet around in frosty rock.
Rigo sets it off to the side and looks down into the pool again. "Part one. Now, lets see what the second act is."
Toth picks at it. Just ice?
Mana: Not ice. Rock - you can't even scratch it, much less melt it with a touch.
Mana: But it's rock that's behaving suspiciously like ice.
Toth: "Hmmph. Come on now." He places a hand on it again, attempting to ignite it. [Firebolt] [Magic Lore?]
Mana: 50, Mr. Toth.
Toth rolled 1d100 and got 80 ( Total: 80 ) for 70
Mana: The fire scorches it black. It seems, at least in this aspect, it's acting as rock.
Mana: Gazing down into the pool…
Mana: (…Maybe that's it? Is there something else to find…?)
Mana: …The glint of something thin and silver.
Toth dives back in!
Wilhelmine snaps and grasps for it. (She never got out.)
Mana: Wilhelmine pulls it out, from where it was embedded in the sand.
Mana: The perfect needle.
Mana: It's, I mean - it's a very good needle. Thin. Brilliant-sharp.
Rigo uses Toth's distration to try and corrode the mystic energies behind the pillar. [Magic Lore of some flavor?]
Mana: Sure, 70! What are you hoping for?
Xsaieta whistles. (He, as well, had never climbed out of the pool, but Wilhelmine's eyes were sharper.)
[OOC] Rigo: Just aiming to pull the pillar back, see whats at the core of the rock.
Rigo rolled 1d100 and got 85 ( Total: 85 ) for 95 [Focus and Apritude]
Mana: The one from which the brineshrouds emerged, right?
[OOC] Rigo: the one covering everything around it!
[OOC] Mana: Roger!
Wilhelmine climbs out of the pool, inspecting the needle more closely. What's its purpose - to prick? To mend?
Mana: Pricking, lancing. An acupuncture needle, bifurcated at the tip.
Mana: The crystal cracks away under the attention of your magic, Rigo, collapsing under the weight. It's hollow at the center - saltwater spills out, and a host of saltwater ghosts, which bury themselves in the sand and the nearby mesa, passing through solids to escape attention.
Mana: You could probably catch one!
Wilhelmine: "I suppose this is it. Curious. Though how is it - "
Wilhelmine jabs one of the ghosts with the needle.
Rigo raises his lips to his fingers, spits, and snags a ghost in passing. "Not so fast, you."
Mana: Wilhelmine: The ghost you lance through twists, squirms, darkens, solidifies, taking on a deep, shadowy opacity. It can't escape the needle.
Mana: Rigo: Got one!
Toth: "Oh, what's this, now?"
Wilhelmine removes it. It won't have to escape. "I hope we didn't undo the seal on Vush accidentally."
Toth: "…"
Toth: "Wait…"
Toth: "Rigo… can you hand me that pelt, for a second?"
Wilhelmine: "And then the needle, I presume."
Toth: "Something like that…"
Wilhelmine walks over and jabs it into the pelt herself.
Toth: "No, no, it has to be done in a process."
Toth takes the needle out.
Rigo smiles. "Almost." He gestures at the pelt. "Missing the insides." A gesture at the needle. "Them bones, them bones, gonna walk around…"
Xsaieta peers intently at Mr. Toth.
Toth holds a hand out to Rigo.
Rigo hands it over. Still got the ghost in his other hand. "I would… advice caution."
Toth: "In the end, that's why I brought Xsai, of course, for additional muscle."
Toth sheds his armor and dons the pelt.
Mana: It doesn't really fit, and it's still dripping wet, but you can tie your belt around it like so, and pull the snout over your face like a mask, and - well, it works as armor.
Rigo looks at the ghost in his hand. "How many of you has she put in the bones of that thing?"
Toth: "How do I look?"
Xsaieta: "Fierce, Mr. Toth."
Rigo: "Say 'Trick or Treat' and maybe I'll give you a piece of candy."
Toth: "Ha ha. I don't suppose you learned anything about acupuncture from your medical friend earlier?"
Mana: The ghost twists. It's not the talking kind of ghost!
Toth: "Well… stand back."
Toth: "Things are about to get… hairy."
Xsaieta takes the tiniest step back.
Rigo: "I'm good here, thanks." A pull on his wine gourd.
Toth tightens his belt really tight and lowers the helm more over his face, looking through its eyes.
Mana: And those eyes blink a vicious glare, and the form Toth wears completes itself in a moment, in a flicker of moonlight to quick to be seen.
Mana: A wolf, tremendous and proud, vicious of claw, long of fang and jaw. Centuries old, as great as an elk. The wounds on your stomach still haven't healed. The ache in your neck still hasn't departed.
Rigo: "Even knowing that was coming, it's still incredibly unsettling."
Xsaieta blinks, repeatedly- then glances towards Rigo for a second. "…I'm not drunk enough, either. None of us are drunk enough. We categorically could not possibly be drunk enough."
Mana: In your jaws and legs, you can feel the muscle-memory-
Mana: The pounce, the claws that catch-
Mana: You can remember what it felt like to eat half the Empire, with your tigers and wolves and hyenas and warriors in tow.
Xsaieta: "Mr… Toth?"
A deep, bassy rumble from well within his gut escapes his mouth.
Xsaieta: "…hey, there. Lookin'… good." Xsaieta ambles forward, the one step back he took.
Wilhelmine: "Put the pin back in, Mr. Toth."
Xsaieta: "…you're sure that won't hurt him?"
Toth still grips the needle within two mighty claws, and with unusual clarity, he reaches over and jabs himself in the forearm!
Wilhelmine: "Think it worked?"
Mana: It hurts like hell. A fine plume of blood blooms outward from the spot, billowing out into the air.
Toth roars, and then indignantly pulls out the needle!
Xsaieta: "!!"
Toth: "Nnngnh…" he shakes his head, like he's trying to shake his skull out from his ears!
Mana: The form departs you, leaving you standing draped in the pelt.
Rigo: "/me grabs the wolf-head and yanks the pelt off of his friend.
Mana: Just as Rigo latches onto it, pulling it off like an old sheet.
Toth: "Haa…"
Toth: "Oh…damn."
Toth sits down for a second.
Rigo: "Rough?"
Toth: "Incredible."
Toth: "I didn't know before what it felt like and -meant- to rend the world apart with your own jaws."
Toth: "It…" He exhales. "Probably could have smashed a path straight to Vush himself and taken him on right then and there."
Toth: "I don't… maybe I'm overestimating, since it's definitely new."
Xsaieta scooted forward to give Mr. Toth a hand, or something - then crouches to the ground, knees bent to the side, ears perked up intently.
Xsaieta: "…wow."
Wilhelmine: "Huh."
Wilhelmine: "'Taken him on?'"
Toth: "Fought. Battled, killed. Eaten."
Rigo nods. "Gotten it's guts back."
Rigo: "And then been even stronger."
Toth gives this very careful look to Rigo, a mixture of fearful realization, and of curiosity.
Toth: "…the needle's something special too."
Wilhelmine: "Go on."
Rigo takes a pull from his wine gourd. "Makes ghosts solid…" He gestures at his friends to finish the thought.
Toth: "I probably pulled it out in time- or didn't leave it in long enough? There was a strong sense of vertigo, at being at the very edge of something."
Toth: "Looming, numerous black ships upon a shore, glowing an odd yellow… kind of like these here." He gestures to the mesas about.
Toth takes Xsaieta's hand to help stand up.
Toth: "At least, that's what I 'saw'.'"
Toth: "It also hurt a goddamn lot." He chuckles.
Wilhelmine: "Curious."
Wilhelmine: "Walk it off."
Rigo takes a long look at the ghost in his hand. Was it perhaps a person once upon a time?
Mana: Nope. Seems like it's just a regular ghost.
Toth: "That's the idea, yeah."
Mana: (Which, I mean, is good.)
Mana: This particular one does seem to be the ghost of some seawater.
Toth: "(So slow, though…)"
Mana: It puts in an extra burst of effort in an attempt to wriggle free, but fails.
Rigo looks at the ghost. And lets it go.
Toth re-armors up.
Mana: It scurries away. I wonder where it'll end up?
[OOC] Mana: +1 kP to those present, by the way.
[OOC] Rigo: Woot!

Mana: …Somewhere distant, Vush roars, wiping tears of pain from his eyes, exhaling, sputtering, stooping.
Mana: His lieutenants look to him first. Then the other followers. They watch him over cookpots, they watch him over dice-games.
Mana: "Well…" He says. His mouth is dry. His spit is tinged with red. "…It's going to be today."

Mana: And so it was written.
