Mana P2y1s01

Mana: And so it was written: Pokiehlember 2nd, Year 1, Gnome's Day. Dawn rises over the statue of the mystic, and the sunjammers are stirring, casting out their lines, setting breakfast to cooking.
Mana: In the distance, there's a dense cover of clouds, rolling in. It shines brilliantly with the colors of the sunrise.
Theodore stretches out his arms behind his head as eh watches the sun rise from the comfort of his precariously hanging hammock. After a while he climbs up and out of it though, and heads over to the cooking fires.
Toth rolls from his bunk, wiping away the morning's crust from his eyes. His nose sniffs curiously at the sea's air, before he remembers that no, he didn't return home that night… he stands and stretches in the sunrise, and begins to get (more) dressed.
Mana: "Fish, yeah?" Someone says to Theo, handing him a plate and fork before he responds.
Theodore: "You know it," He says while taking the plate and a seat at the same time.
Aurora sits up from wherever she was put last night, blearily looking around. "…This… isn't my room…"
Xsaieta does a monumental stretch and then rolls out of a hammock - in which he'd been curled up precariously like a very large kitten - with grace and dexterity not commonly attributed to exits from hammocks.
Veracruz can be heard running, he's going full tilt towards the sunjammer encampment. He takes a light hop and land with both feet in the ground, skidding a good distance in the wet floor, carrying a small paper bag in his hands. He slides all the way to close to the party, jumps again and lands beside Theodore "Hey" he offers up the bag "Want some fresh bread?"
Theodore: "Nope! It was *way* too late and far away to drag you all the way back there."
Toth: "Bread would be great, thank you Veracruz." He nods to Aurora. "How're you feeling?"
Veracruz looks at Aurora, smiling at her "Was going to ask it, but Toth beat me to it"
Theodore: "Oooh, fresh bread? Yeah sounds good." He pauses for a second after holding a hand out towards Veracruz, then eyes him for as moment. "Man though, did you even HAVE any competition for that award?"
Aurora furrows her brow, stretching a bit and discreetly checking for any wounds. "…Almost like new, I'd say."
Xsaieta eventually saunters his way over to the cookfires. He's not wearing all the bright layers of clothing, yet - they're still bundled up around his weapons and stuff- just a white robe and then a few swooshy layers of coloured silk over that, and soft white puffy pants. He, also, accepts a plate of fish, and waves to the others. "Morning!"
Veracruz chuckles, and hands opens up the bag, letting Theo pick one for himself
Theodore snatches one out of the bag, then gets to munching on it.
Xsaieta ear perks and gives the bread-bag a forlorn look. "…can I have some?"
Toth: "That's good to hear. They were a sturdy lot, but we won in the end." He slides a slithering arm into Veracruz's breadsack and withdraws a piece of bread with naught a sound.
Veracruz tosses him the entire bag, he can get to distributing the rest "Yeah, you did a pretty good job, Aurora. We sort of underestimated them, i'm sorry"
Aurora nods, going to get some fish for herself now that she's a bit more awake after stretching. "There's reasons most people don't want to tangle with the guards, yes."
Xsaieta yelps and jumps up from his seat, holding plate in one hand and precariously catching the bag with the other, sets it down, grabs a - piece? whatever - and starts om nom nom. He seems distracted by that, for a little while. "Glad you're feeling better, Aurora."
Toth gives Xsaieta a morning nod before also biting into the bread.
Aurora: "I guess a good night's sleep real does cure all that ails us."
Theodore: "Mmhm."
Toth: "Most of it yeah."
Veracruz doesn't quite picks a plate or anything, he just gets his portion of fish put on the bread he's got. He's not quite eating a fish sandwich either, he's just using the bread as some sort of dish for a lot of fish "A good night's sleep is good for you"
Xsaieta omfs something through a mouthful of breakfast that sounds like it might have been something like, "Not gonna hear me complaining" .
Toth: "World's still here, so the seven apocolypses haven't won yet. Good going, so far."
Mana: The iceberg drifting into the bay is bigger now, though - you can see its two peaks, coming in past the cape of Dryad.
Veracruz: "Yeah. Right now we've got some good breakfast too. Pretty rare to have fish, I say"
Xsaieta: "Well, the day's yet young." He grins at Toth, having swallowed the mouthful of food with which he had been contending previously.
Toth: "Indeed it is. I assume we're all attending that… funeral, that I heard of?"
Veracruz looks skywards "Yeah, there's Alexander's funeral, is it in the morning?"
Theodore: "Yeah, although I think that wa sin the afternoon."
Aurora: "It's happening around noon."
Toth: "Mm, have some time, then." He consumes some fish.
Veracruz: "YEah, we've got time, we gotta figure out a thing to do in the meantime. I mean, there's a lot of things to do"
Veracruz yawns "Like, i'm a morning person, but my brain isn't quite, tough. So if you've got an idea"
Toth: "If I may, I do have a suggestion."
Veracruz: "Good!"
Aurora eats her own fish at the leisurely pace with the provided fork, alternating it with bites of bread. And after swallowing the latest bite, "Go ahead."
Toth: "The Services had a foothold down in Shade, and while it is no longer there, some of the lower-ranked soldiers still… I wouldn't call it 'patrol,' but they linger."
Veracruz: "Guess they mighta gotten lost. You want to shoo them out?"
Xsaieta looks up at Toth, predatory. "So you're sayin'…"
Toth: "Exactly."
Xsaieta: "…smash 'em!"
Toth grins, satisfied.
Veracruz: "Sounds like a good morning warmup"
Xsaieta punctuated that last with a fist into hand, having at some point put his plate on the ground and then the remaining bit of bread on the plate. Just in case he had to gesticulate wildly.
Toth: "You've got the Apathia- these will be large, lumbering, ghostlike beings, with a horrid smile."
Toth: "Take care, because they have a nasty poison, and can and will inflict some lingering wounds."
Theodore: "I could be down, yeah. Maybe even check out that weird orb thing while we're down there."
Toth: "Normally, they find those low on mana, and then… well, drain the rest, is the best way to say. 'Excise references.'"
Aurora: "That sounds… unpleasant, to say the least."
Veracruz: "Hrm, well. I've done well up to now without it, I can handle"
Toth: "Resignations are spider-like things- fragile if you can get the jump on them. They'll wrap the victims in saran wrap, and… pack them away, is the best way to say."
Xsaieta shudders.
Veracruz just stares at Toth "That… Sounds terribly awful. Whatever that is"
Aurora: "…Saran wrap?"
Toth: "They seek to hollow out our world, starting with Titania, and fill it with their own- oh, it's…" He makes a face, realizing how weird saran wrap really -is-.
Xsaieta: "…the worst?"
Toth: "This… clear, paper-like substance that is also sticky."
Toth: "If you burn it, it melts."
Xsaieta nods. Sounds like it is, in fact, the worst. Prior shuddering: justified.
Veracruz makes a disgusted face "That does sounds like the worst thing"
Toth: "Don't think we'll run into the Dispassionata, but it was like a large pink teddybear, with girders for arms and a booming voice. There's probably more of them but they don't seem very mobile."
Toth: "These talk. Resignations talk too, but it's kind of creepy."
Veracruz: "Do they say anything interesting or worth hearing?"
Toth: "Actually… yes. The Dispassionata, at least, was very informative and almost friendly, so long as we weren't trying to get by him or banish the cold expanse behind him."
Toth: "Don't bother with the Resignations."
Xsaieta: "Got it!"
Veracruz: "Alright"
Toth: "Then, there's the Justifications, which…" He shakes his head. "I've met one, and from what I've been told - by a Dispassionata - is that they're pretty likely to kill you, but here I am."
Aurora: "…Huh. These all sound very bizarre."
Veracruz now only has a piece of bread with a lot of fish juice in it, he starts eating it "Yeah, i'm actually curious"
Veracruz: "Figure we should just head down carefully and see what we find. Know if there's too many of them?"
Toth: "One is wandering about, calls herself Nara Odeheimer. Very tall, was wearing clothes like it was summer, pink and orange. Lot of makeup, and a croquet mallet."
Toth: "There wasn't -many- last time I was down there, but honestly I couldn't make it past one Apathia."
Toth: "Not on my own, at least."
Xsaieta stops mid-raising-a-piece-of-bread-to-his-mouth and stares at Toth for a second. "…okay, then."
Xsaieta: "Well, I mean… you got us, so." Fangs grin.
Aurora: "Hence going as a group instead."
Toth smiles warmly. "I thank you all in advance, for this."
Theodore: "Y'didn't actually say what a resignation was, though."
Toth: "Resignations are spider-like things- fragile if you can get the jump on them. They'll wrap the victims in saran wrap, and… pack them away, is the best way to say."
Theodore: "Oh wait you ment something different when you mentioned it again."
Toth nods. "Talking with them isn't very enlightening."
Theodore: "Right on."
Toth: "There's a pipe we can take on the wall of Undine down to Shade, leading through the Vertical Market."
Veracruz: "Sounds like we know the way in. Should we go now?"
Veracruz: "Or" he takes a bite of his bread "You all want some more fish?"
Toth: "I'm just about finished- thank you though."
Theodore: "Think I'm good to go."
Aurora shakes her head, her plate finished. "I'm good to leave whenever."
Toth returns his empty plate to… wherever he mysteriously grabbed it.
Xsaieta: "Naw, I'm good." He saunters back to the hammock, shrugs on a bunch more coloured silk robes, twirls his greatsword over his head but not near the hammock ropes a few times, then saunters back. "Naw, NOW I'm good."
Toth: "Let's not stand on ceremony, then!" He hefts his staff in one hand, resting it against a shoulder.
Veracruz nods, finishing his bread, shouldering his backpack "Let's get going, then!"
Theodore starts heading down the statue and towards the wall, then.
Mana: Plumes of thick, black smoke are billowing from the vents of one of the pagoda-houses of the Silk People.
Mana: At the storm drain, there seem to be more of the comatose than usual - they're being laid out on wooden platforms, newly built.
Mana: (Well, not really a storm drain. The outflow pipe. You know.)
Veracruz looks at the people being put on wooden platforms, that's bad
Mana: There seem to be a few people overseeing it - one's passing out packages of goods. (you see one of the denizens open it - it contains fruit, and clothes, and who knows what else)
Mana: They're dressed in white, their brows are marked with three vertical red lines, curved inwards.
Xsaieta lets out a slow breath.
Theodore rests his hands behind his head. He's not super familiar with this part of town and will let Toth lead the wya now.
Aurora mutters quietly, "Does that seem ominous to anyone else?"
Toth: "It's interesting. But for the time, I'll let them be."
Mana: The other pours water into the lips of the patients, one by one, from a wooden bowl.
Veracruz: "Seems like we need to get going, really"
Theodore: "Well, only in so far as any make shift hospital is ominous."
Xsaieta: "Guess this is what we're up against, y'know?"
Mana: The pipe continues inwards towards that well-known breach in the waterway that leads downwards into the Vertical Market.
Mana: The descent is especially steep today: A harsh descent downwards that shakes as Aurora sets down atop it.
Aurora: "That looks to be… quite the trip…"
Veracruz looks down "Ooh, I haven't seen this place before"
Theodore: "Mm, yeah don't slip. Duno if I could catch you in that armor, haha."
Mana: The Vertical Market: Some ancient, buried shopping arcade street - lined by boutiques on either side on two levels, with a still-flowing fountain midway through.
Toth: "There's mummies in the alleys, do be careful."
Mana: Some trick of the foundation has tilted it greatly, forcing travelers to make a sharp, precarious descent down its flagstones, past darkened windows, through spilling water, to the climb down to the Causeway below.
Mana: (It shifts with the day - sometimes it's steeper, sometimes it's gentler.)
Xsaieta whistles. "This looks fun."
Veracruz grins "This does looks like fun" he looks at the descent "Well, which way do we want to go?"
Theodore: "Down, I'd imagine."
Mana: The only way, really, is down: You can see it open up onto a cavern below at the smashed afr end.
Toth: "A few steps at a time."
Aurora: "Carefully, yes."
Veracruz nods "Well, let me go first" he takes a moment to make a mental map of the descent, and jumps down a couple of steps, jumps to another, uses the wall to break fall for a moment, grabbing hold of a flagstone with his hand to stop. He seems to be having fun. He takes a breath and continues his descent as such
Mana: There are a few places with better footing, that Veracruz deftly leaps from: A trashcan welded to the sidewalk, a lamp-post still standing, the edge of the overflowing fountain.
Mana: The lower half is mostly just a hopefully-controlled skid, but that's not too bad, either.
Toth: "That's about as good a path as we'll get today, I think."
Xsaieta: "With difficulty." He grins a little bit too much, and follows behind Cruz. It's… a little bit less flashy, but parkour is one thing he'll be content with a silver medal in next to Veracruz' example.
Veracruz halts for a moment as he lands on the trashcan, takes a breather and hops straight to the lamp-post, using his momentum to spin and and direct himself towards the fountain. He halts there for a moment, gets his hands and feet wet and pulls out a knife, sliding down the rest of the way
Toth will follow Xsaieta, not worried about the cuffs of his suit being ruined with the occasional drag and slide here and there.
Theodore scruches his face, then follows v e r y slowly after the others.
Mana: The next drop is to the Whisper Causeway, below: The waterfall flows over a stone platform jutting out from the canyon wall, around luminescent mushrooms that cluster around it.
Xsaieta hops along after Veracruz, caterpillar formation, close enough on his tail that he narrowly avoids getting tangled up with him in the final bumpy roll at the end.
Aurora takes up the rear, waiting for Theodore to get to the next junction before following herself.
Mana: This area has been pitted by the scars of explosions, but the platforms still seem to be standing - leading one way, towards Gnome, and deeper into the depths of the Shade, and the other…
Mana: …Well, that's towards the Dreaming City, isn't it? Probably.
Theodore: "Ah, that's kind of a neat little waterfall."
Toth: "See these blast marks? Caused by the Justification, or so she said and I interpret."
Toth: "There might yet still be another Services post behind the waterfall if my hunch is right. Or if it's wrong, I'll just end up all wet."
Veracruz: "Hrm… Better wet than sorry, I say"
Theodore: "Well, good thing you're not allow this time, huh?"
[OOC] Theodore: alone^
Aurora frowns, though is still flippant, "Well, it's not as if we didn't get wet multiple times yesterday…"
Mana: The waterfall looks like it's flowing over solid rock. You aren't certain exactly where one would hide a Service post in it from where you stand now.
[OOC] Toth: well maybe it'd… have a secret entrance shut up
Xsaieta: "Nothin' wrong with getting all wet every once in a while~."
Theodore: "Yesterday was a good day."
Toth: "Hrm…" He peers about. "No… probably not, then.
[OOC] Mana: naw just clarifyin. You could climb up it, so it's not the "solid curtain of water" kinda waterfall.
Toth: "False alarm."
[OOC] Toth: -aha-
[OOC] Toth: alright cool
Toth: "Deeper we go." He heads for the platform that leads deep, deep, deeper…
Veracruz follows after Toth, he's done enough leading for a day
Mana: Past the gates of Gnome - deeper still, into the winding, snakelike roads where it starts getting colder, and the mist starts rising.
Mana: Through the fog, you can spy a group ahead:
Mana: A traveling party, numbering three. One of them about six feet tall. The other two… about two feet tall, each, carrying a banner.
Xsaieta shivers, although it's not like he's not wearing enough layers of robes.
Theodore squints in the direction of the banner.
Mana: Can't read it from this distance. They are coming closer, though.
Veracruz stretches his arms slightly, notices Theodore squinting and looks ahead, noticing the fellow travellers "Recognize that, Theo?"
Theodore: "Nope."
Theodore waves.
Toth continues toward them as well.
Mana: The banner, as the mist around it grows thinner, reads: "GOBLINS" . Which makes sense, given that it's a pack of goblins.
Mana: (The taller one is three goblins, stacked atop one another, with the highest wearing a head-dress.)
Veracruz waves waves to the goblins as well "Hello"
Aurora: "…Now that might be trouble."
Theodore: "Not for long."
Mana: They shout. "Helllooooo!" "Helloooooo!" "Good morniiiiiiing!" "Kill them and bathe in their blood!" "Ye- whaaaaaaaat?" "Kill them and bathe in water!"

Mana: It is unclear whether it is a response or an explanation.
Mana: "N…no they don't!!"
Theodore: "Do so!"
Mana: "You… you take that back!"
Theodore: "No way jose!"

Xsaieta rolled 1d100 and got 1 ( Total: 1 ) for 5/85
[OOC] Toth: critical grin
Mana: It's a critical hit! He's on a rampage! Ravage the enemy!
Xsaieta jumps up into the air at the very last second, roars at the top of his lungs, and skewers the goblin tower! [Rampage] [Ravage]
Xsaieta rolled d12+100,275% and got 1 ( Total: 277.75 )
[OOC] Mana: 277]! The goblin tower falls to pieces with two clatter of bones and two puffs of smoke.
Theodore lets out a short whistle.
Toth: "Fierce!"
Veracruz just stares at Xsaieta "Now THAT was great"
Aurora blinks, getting out of her guarding stance and sheathing her sword. "…That'll do. That'll do quite nicely."
Xsaieta grins, swirls around, silk robes billowing out in every direction, and bows amidst the goblin bones and puffs of smoke.
[OOC] Mana: Got 11 AP. Got 280 EXP. Got 56 Lucre each.
Veracruz spins his knives, putting the flames out, before sheathing them again
Veracruz: "Well, that as solved very fast too"

Toth kicks the GOBLINS banner to the side.
[OOC] Xsaieta: [SHP: 50] HP: 231/325, MP: 325/325, SoS: 81
Veracruz stares at the banner for a moment, shakes his head slightly "First step on that problem?" he shrugs "Anyway, which way further, Toth?"
Toth: "Still deeper yet. We're getting there though."
Mana: The traveling party passes the gates of Gnome, and heads deeper, deeper, towards [Hexagon Land]:
Mana: Shrouded in icy fog, a cavern of hexagonal stones, some of which jut out from the floor.
Veracruz blinks, looking around the hexagonal stones "Looks like someone built a cave out of floors"
Toth: "Its what the 'sickness' looks like close up, to be honest."
Toth: "The afflicted's veins form that pattern, among other things."
Mana: Veracruz: One of the pillars crumbles as your hands brush across it.
Mana: …Surprisingly brittle.
Xsaieta twitches his ears a little. "That's… really freaky, honestly."
Theodore: "Weird."
Aurora: "…Quite."
Veracruz pulls back his hand "Err… Do they get that brittle?"
Toth: "Not… that I know of. They're composed enough to be covered in saran wrap. After that… I would have no idea. You might be able to see for yourself, in a bit."
Toth continues further within Hexagon Land without further explanation.
Veracruz makes a weird face, and just goes along
Xsaieta follows behind Toth.
Mana: A passage like an aisle: Holes in both of the walls are lined with wheeled tracks, as if drawers could be mounted on them.
Mana: …Nevertheless, all the drawers, each and every one of them, have been meticulously removed, apparently with great force. The edges of the rails are banged up and bent, twisted, in places.
Toth frowns deeply.
Mana: There's a fork in the tunnel ahead: Left goes towards the Great Stone Hall, right towards… well, that was blocked up before, wasn't it?
Xsaieta: "…someone cleared out in a hurry, huh?"
Theodore: "Were they building an office or something?"
Veracruz looks at the empty racks, looks at Toth "Take it you know what was in here"
Toth: "Yes. The remains of all those entombed by the Resignations."
Toth: "I had hoped to at least have them retrieved after clearing the area, for proper burials."
Veracruz: "I think the Resignations wanted to keep them"
Toth: "Yes…"
Toth shakes his head.
Toth: "In any case…" He points his staff to the left tunnel. "That way leads to the Great Stone Hall. Haven't explored it officially. And then there's…" He points his staff to the other tunnel.
Toth: "-That-, was blocked off by this weird statue and sign."
Xsaieta: "Next we're gonna find out it's all an elaborate con to get ground-up dried people-livers for weird potions."
Theodore: "…What would they want with 'em?"
Theodore: "Aha."
Toth: "To completely dispose of them. To hollow out our world, completely, to fill it with theirs."
Theodore: "Wouldn't be be easier to just burn them, rather then lug 'em around though?" Theodore scratches at the back of his head.
Toth: "Something more complete than burning, I'd suspect."
Toth pauses.
Xsaieta: "Yeah, I bet they got somethin' special in mind. Don't… think I want to know what, right now." Pause. "…bastards."
Toth: "I dare wonder if they could… erase them from narrative?" he mumbles.
Theodore: "Hmm."
Xsaieta: "You did say their deal was excising references."
Aurora: "I rather like our world… I wouldn't want to see all of these hexagons everywhere."
Theodore: "Well. Standing in a weird empty hallway probably isn't going to change much so…" Theodore's head bobs back and forth in the directions of the two tunnels.
Toth shakes his head. "I'd like to explore this new hallway a bit, then."
Xsaieta: "Right behind ya, Mr. Toth."
Toth: "Well… 'new', even though they're both new to all of you." He heads to the now statueless area.
Theodore: "Same thing, really."
Veracruz looks at Toth, follows "Well, 'it wasn't here the last time someone was here' is sufficiently new"
Mana: Deep grooves run along the smooth floor as the hallway continues, curling in on itself.
Mana: It opens up onto a room I'd like to call the [Spear of God]:
Veracruz: "Don't quite think we're going down. Think we're going to hit a deadend"
Mana: Four tremendous stone arms jut out from the four sides of the tremendous pyramidal room, holding aloft a tremendous, spiralling inverted minaret, sculpted as if grasping about its half.
Mana: The tip of the thing, pointing down into the tremendous darkness, is adorned with a gigantic, engraved, golden point, gleaming sharp.
Mana: The passage you arrive from opens up onto the sleeve of one of the huge arms.
Mana: There's a doorway, just over the curled knuckles, leading into… whatever this thing is.
Veracruz blinks, looks at the structure "Whooa, that's…"
Xsaieta quietly: "(Do you suppose… the Services are trying to compensate for something…?)"
Theodore: "They came in upside down, hah."
Aurora: "(…Maybe.)"
Toth: "Their architecture is far more cold than this."
Toth: "You'll know it from the freezing winds and mere aura that makes it hard to breathe."
Xsaieta: "…huh. Figure this was here before they got here, then? Could be why they closed it off."
Toth: "I don't recommend getting anywhere near one of their entrances. But we'll have to, so ignore my advice altogether."
Toth: "Possibly… I know I didn't build it, and I don't know if anyone else did… but I doubt it."
Toth starts along the sleeve and up the arm towards the doorway.
Theodore looks around for some loose rubble, even backtracking slightly if he has to, then tosses it down into the dark pit.
Xsaieta grins and claps Toth on the shoulder. "If and when we do, it'll be because you led us there and pointed me in pointy-end first. So, I mean, don't worry about it in advance."
Mana: At the bottom of the abyss below, there's a faint speck of blue light.
Toth smiles at Xsaieta and nods.
Mana: The rubble soars downwards, downwards, downwards…
Mana: No, no impact. It vanishes against the distant point of blue light.
Veracruz blinks
Aurora: "…Huh. No one jump down."
Veracruz: "Is it that far down or is there something down there?"
Theodore scratches at the side fo his face for a moment, then cups his hands aorund his mouth and he squats down near the edge. He takes a deep breath, then: "GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!"
Mana: There's a faint echo.
Aurora: "…Uh, what?"
Mana: Toth: The dark archway welcomes you.
Toth closes his eyes and stops walking as Theodore shouts. Pause, two, three.
Theodore: "I wanted to see how well it echoed!"
Xsaieta pouts at Aurora. "Not even at the end of the day?"
Toth reopens his eyes and continues through the archway.
Veracruz looks at Toth "Don't think it's going to echo very well at all"
Aurora shrugs, following after Toth. "Maybe then, it's your choice."
Theodore nods to himself, then hops back up to trail after Toth and Aurora.
Mana: Upwards, along the spiral of the minaret, torches are lit.
Xsaieta ambles after Mr. Toth. Actually, to his right and only slightly behind him. He doesn't want anyone to be caught off guard!
Mana: As you travel some distance up the staircase - (though the ceiling, you see, is stepped like a set of stairs, also) - there begin to appear paintings, all along the wall, set on nails clumsily hammered into the ancient stone.
Mana: They're okay paintings - paintings of nobility and their cats, that one still life of the fruit bowl. Nothing special, really.
Veracruz looks at the paintings, hopefully they're not the horror movie kind of painting
Mana: Nothing seems especially creepy about them, except for the fact that they're surprising paintings in a weird tower in the depths of the Shade.
Mana: I mean, no getting around that.
[OOC] Toth: shade.exe
Mana: That one painting of the ruined fountain is kind of nice, though. The light falling on the ivy is well done.
Mana: Eventually, the staircase opens up onto a studio: Easels full of paintings, most in various states of half-finished. A tiny cot in the corner, some things, a little camp stove. Some sacks of supplies.
Veracruz just kind of smiles lightly at them, and continues moving up
Mana: The artist - silver-haired, slight, wrapped in a tightly-fitting robe - sits at one of them, eyes furrowed in concentration, slowly, slowly moving the brush.
Mana: A painting of a sleeping lion.
Xsaieta doesn't… seem particularly surprised, or anything. Just kind of glances at each painting as they head up the stairs, admiringly. Once at the studio… he clears his throat, politely.
Mana: The artist turns at the noise - "Your majest - or-"
Mana: "You aren't who I would expect. Are you bringing supplies?"
Toth: "We could… though at the moment I think we're just visiting."
Veracruz: "Well, not right now, though if you do need something, i'd be happy to assist"
Theodore: "Though uh, which majesty, out of curiosity?"
Veracruz: "That said, yeah, we're just visiting, seeing what's in here"
Mana: A tilt of the head to one side as the artist swivels on the stool to face you. "Oh. Well, it should be perfectly alright to stumble in."
Mana: "The Emperor, of course! He does visit, at times."
Mana: "I'm the Shade's artist in residence."
Toth enters, taking care to not stumble.
Xsaieta: "Lovely artwork, by the way."
Theodore: "Woah, he comes all the way out here? I'm impressed!"
Mana: A raise of the hand before lips - the artist stifles a blush. "Ahem! Glad you think so."
Mana: "He does! Though, infrequently. He does take great care that I'm doing well, and follows my work with great interest."
Veracruz: "It's great to have fans, I imagine"
Xsaieta grins, with a carefree sort of 'well, it is' tilt of the head.
Toth: "Would have visited earlier, just… there was a statue in the way."
Mana: "Really! That might explain something. I've been, ah, living on scraps for some time."
Toth: "Big… face, had a glowing sign that said WIN?"
Mana: "…I mean, perhaps I should have sent word, but…"
Toth: "Oh, well- it didn't seem like one of your works."
Mana: "…well, I didn't leave to look…"
Mana: "..and no, it wasn't… um…"
Xsaieta stage-whispers: "(It wasn't very lovely. But it's gone now.)"
Toth: "The path's free now, so everything ended up okay."
Mana: "…Well, as long as no one will miss it!"
Mana: "…Though, it is a little important that the Guard can get here…"
Mana: "I'm not really used to having guests. You can make yourselves at home."
Mana: "That's what guests do, isn't it?"
Toth: "With permission, thank you."
Theodore glances here and then, then sits on the studiest looking thing that doesn't have wet paint on it. "Yup!"
Veracruz: "More or less, yeah" he takes a moment to look at the unfinished artwork, but just a moment
Theodore: "So what's with the locale anyway? Something super rad this upside down tower is hangin' over?"
Mana: Theodore: A milk crate!
Toth: "I'm Mr. Toth- just Toth will do." He bows slightly, then finds a seat.
Xsaieta: "That's the general idea, yes." He disports himself on the nearest comfortable-looking sofa-like object.
Mana: Xsaieta: Probably… two crates, unless you're feeling particularly daring about that cot.
Mana: "I'm the artist Mira Detta, of course! Not that it's obvious. I should start signing my work, shouldn't I?"
Veracruz: "It would help, if you're a good artist then everyone will want to know who you are. And you ARE a good artist"
Veracruz: "Wish I had known of your art earlier"
Theodore: "Oh yeah, I'm Theodore."
Xsaieta ear droops ever so slightly and disports himself on a crate, then. There's making yourself at home, and then there's, well. "Yima Xsaieta. It's wonderful to meet you."
Mana: "The tower! Well, it's my studio. I mean, it's hanging over…"
Veracruz: "Right! Veracruz will do, courier- Though off-duty right now"
Mana: "…Well, this beautiful blue light. And sometimes there's a speck of white or gold in it. And it twinkles. There's that."
Mana: "On some days, it's dimmer. On some days, it's just as bright. On most days…"
Mana: "…Well, I don't check."
Toth: "Its odd but seems harmless enough."
Theodore: "Oh, just looked like a cool place to set up shop?"
Veracruz: "Aha. Yeah this is a neat place"
Mana: "Well, the Emperor decided that each district needed its own artist to capture the full spirit of Titania."
Mana: "So, he set me up with a studio, here."
Veracruz: "Aha"
Theodore: "Huh, I had no idea."
Toth: "Interesting. I hadn't heard of that mandate."
Mana: "I hadn't actually heard of this place before. But it's nice enough, isn't it?"
Toth: "Ah, yeah- cornerstore's a bit far away, but otherwise fine."
Veracruz: "It is. Must be good for inspiration"
Xsaieta scratches behind an ear. "Definitely an interesting place to be. It's important to have a studio that inspires you." Something Anya always said, at any rate.
Mana: "Yes! I'm incredibly inspired!" The artist waves at all the paintings surrounding.
Mana: …Most of them are barely past the sketch stage.
Toth: "Been down here long?"
Veracruz stares "You look like you're seeking something with those"
Mana: A curious look turned Mr. Toth's way. The artist raises a finger to pale, slender cheek. "Actually, I have been, haven't I?"
Mana: "Let me think…"
Mana: "…It'd be… about…" The artist counts the empty sacks strewn about the studio.
Mana: "Thirty-eight years!"
Mana: "Goodness."
Theodore blinks a few times.
Veracruz blinks, tiltings his head to the side
Veracruz: "(U-unexpected)"
Mana: (The artist looks barely twenty, too.)
Aurora: "…That's quite a long time."
Toth … nods. "Not uh. Not bad."
Mana: "I mean, when you're going through it, it sort of flows by, but when you stop and count…"
Mana: "Thirty-eight. Wow. That is a pretty big number."
Xsaieta tilts his head to the side. "Must get lonely."
Mana: "Oh, well, maybe? I haven't noticed. How would you know?"
Veracruz: "Well, if you didn't notice"
Theodore: "That is a pretty big number for, like, years yeah."
Veracruz: "Then you likely weren't!"
Xsaieta: "I guess if you haven't noticed- what Cruz said, yeah."
Mana: Mira Detta clasps hands together. "That settles it, then."
Mana: "I'm glad I haven't been lonely, then."
Toth: "Even so, I hope you don't mind the company."
Mana: "Oh, no, I don't!"
Veracruz: "Must be great to love your job this much, too"
Mana: "I'm quite fond of it. The Emperor says it's very important, too."
Xsaieta twitches an ear, amiably. Internally, something doesn't seem right - but that's been the case ever since the Emperor was even mentioned. And it's not… really his business, either. "Oh?" That doesn't mean he's not -curious-.
Aurora: "It is?"
Toth: "What does the Emperor think about it all- aside from his decision about the districts and artists."
Mana: "Well, he's glad… I'm doing… well? And… he said the one painting… was good."
Mana: "(…I'd do more like it, if I knew which one he meant…)"
Mana: The artist sags visibly in the seat.
Veracruz: "Hrm… Maybe if we meet him, we'll ask!"
Theodore: "Aha."
Veracruz: "D-don't count on that happening, though, but we'll give fate a chance!"
Mana: "Oh! Well, thank you very much!"
Toth: "We'll do our best. If you need any models, don't be afraid to ask Xsaieta or Aurora." Straight-face.d
Aurora: "Pardon? …Well, I could understand wanting to paint one of the Solar Knights…"
Mana: "I have asked for models, and the Emperor refused. Maybe it'd be a good idea, then."
Theodore: "All the old guys comin' up were from memory, then?"
Xsaieta: "Oh, I'd not mind at all."
Mana: "Yes, they are. And thank you."
Theodore: "Huh, that's not bad at all."
Xsaieta glances up at Mr. Toth. It's the sort of glance you might give someone to indicate that it doesn't -seem- like there are any existential threats here, so…
Toth gives a little half-shrug to Xsaieta in affirmation, and turns back to the artist. "If there's anything else we could do for you, don't hesitate to say so. We do get around the districts quite often."
Mana: "Well…"
Aurora nods. "I wouldn't be opposed to modelling sometime for you, as well."
Mana: "…Some more food might be nice. It's been a while."
Mana: "And yes, that would be wonderful!"
Theodore: "Oh!"
Theodore: "When was the last time you had goods delivered, by the by?"
Mana: "Well…"
Mana: "…I don't really know."
Mana: "Since I count the sacks, yes? If there are no sacks, what do I count?"
Toth: "Fair enough, given little outside light."
Theodore glances up, then towards a window. "… guess it would be hard to track days, yeah."
Mana: The window opens only up onto the tall, square, stone cavern.
Toth: "Mira, this has been lovely. Thank you for your hospitality, though we must be on the move. Sadly, we've a funeral to attend to."
Xsaieta: "Inextricable consequences of bein' in the Shade, yeah." He stands up from the crate, bows elegantly to the artist.
Mana: "Well, I wish them good passage into Paradise!"
Veracruz nods to Mira again "I will convey your wishes to him. And- We'll see if we can bring you something to eat soon enough" he looks at Xsai, for no good reason at all'
Theodore smiles slightly, then gives a nod as he stands up.
Mana: "Well, take care! I'm happy to have had visitors."
Toth smiles and stands. "Be seeing you!" He turns to leave.
Mana: The artist stands up and flops a bow as you leave.
Aurora returns it with a curtsey before they leave.
Mana: Out of the minaret, back towards the fork in the hallway.
Theodore: "Every time someone talks about your emperor he seems a littler stranger and crazier. Just, y'know, throwin' that out there."
Xsaieta: "I know, right?"
Aurora grimaces. "…You might have a point."
Toth: "If we only knew the 'why' behind half this stuff, I bet we'd have so many gates open."
Veracruz sighs "I've got this gut feeling the emperor is fully aware he's a little weird"
Theodore: "Mm."
Veracruz: "Something looked really off there, too. And by that I mean Mira"
Aurora: "Well… thirty-eight years mostly alone might do that to a person."
Xsaieta: "And how many of those years went by without a supply run, I wonder."
Veracruz: "Quite a few given what apparently was here"
Aurora: "That is a good question…"
Toth: "Can only guess where the rest of the artists are holed up."
Veracruz: "Rest?"
Veracruz: "Oh, right, he mentioned others painting the rest of Titania"
Veracruz: "Presumably one in each district… I wonder what they're supposed to paint, though?"
Veracruz: "She seemed like she was looking for… Something"
Veracruz: "So many sketches unfinished, but detailed. Like she had a glimpse of what she wanted but couldn't get it right, and started over"
Xsaieta: "Could be an extra set of eyes and ears, for all we know." He shrugs. "Not gonna let it worry me."
Theodore: "Uh, more like when you have a ton of ideas but can't decide on which one to persue first."
Mana: And so it was written.
