Mana P1y1s29

Mana: And so it was written: Pokiehlember 1st, Year 1, Salamander's Day. The bay of Undine, up by the walls - shattered statues overlook the chill, grey lapping water. Far in the west, the sun is descending. Warm outflow surges underfoot, falling outwards from the pipes out into the harbor.
Vladislav makes his way through the street as he jots something down in a book. Upon reaching an intersection he stops abruptly, glancing up at Alexander. "What is your take on this?"
Alexander: "It's a right mess, that's what it is."
Vladislav: "I expect you'll only have a bigger one on your hands by the end of tomorrow. Once word gets around that a dead man came back to life it's only bound to bring trouble."
Vladislav grins slightly as he states this, glancing around the intersection as if contemplating his next move as he chats.
Alexander: "I'm sure they'll put some spin on it, like they identified the body wrong. But this all seems like just the tip of the iceberg."
Vladislav: "Information control is a rather inconvenient thing, is it not?"
Mana: It's rather late in the day: There's not much motion on the roads. Some people are bringing packs of goods back to their camps in the outflow pipes - one on cloth bags hung from either end of wooden pole, balanced over his shoulders.
Alexander: "Not if it means I get to keep my property."
Vladislav shakes his head. "Property is of little concern. The disasters that have fallen or are to fall upon Titania were outlined by the prophecy. All existing copies in his domain have been confiscated and destroyed, save for the Emperors."
Vladislav: "Nephew or not, I doubt even you can obtain that copy from Jinn."
Alexander: "I'm not even supposed to get close to the tower. The closer the relation, the farther the guards keep you away from it."
Alexander: "Except for an official summons, of course."
Vladislav: "And I doubt we are about to become ironborns of the tower itself."
Alexander: "Haven't been any new ones for a while, anyway."
Vladislav snaps his book shut, slipping it into his satchel. "Therefore, for one to find information regarding Services, Angels, Devils and the like we must look towards forgotten histories. Those of a domain outside the Emperor's grasp that still remembers the old ways."
Vladislav: "How familiar are you with the Dryad District?"
Mana: A whisper, on the crossroads. ( "More and more cases, huh?" "Silk people haven't had any." "Think they've got the cure?" "Think they're -behind- it?" ) The paper-thin people twist and depart, holding themselves against a checking gust coming over the harbor.
Alexander: "Not much more than hearsay. Just isn't much reason to go to Dryad for a noble these days."
Alexander: "I was going to guess that was where you meant, as you headed up, rather than down deeper."
Vladislav: "It is a forgotten district, abandoned by the nobility for certain. Such a fact however works to my advantage."
Alexander: "Mine as well, for the moment. Talking with Erinee is already pushing my luck."
Vladislav: "I have no doubt she will have put the pieces together regarding your demise sometime after your funeral. That is, if she hasn't already."
Alexander: "The pieces will fall as they may."
Wilhelmine traverses the streets of Undine to the crossroads, unsure of where exactly to head next. Whatever journey the wind tells her about, she supposes.
Vladislav: "While I do wish to find another gate or some higher level services, waltzing head first into the situation with little understanding is foolhearty. For the rest of tonight I plan to conduct some research."
Mana: Wilhelmine: There's Alexander, who you briefly met, chatting with a young man carrying a book, who you haven't.
Mana: (The crossroads is very likely the one in the lower docks - one gate one way, another the other, out into the wharves in one direction, up toward the wall-road for the last.)
Alexander: "I've already stirred the pot plenty. Is it a problem if I join you? We can put the drink off for another time."
Wilhelmine stops to stare at him briefly. "Hello again. Still getting into trouble?"
Vladislav considers briefly before nodding. "In the depths of the ruined market district lies the domain of Prince Snake and the forgotten library district of Exmillia. If there was anywhere that had information to help our cause that the Emperor had not hidden, it would be there."
Vladislav looked like he was about to ramble on further, but glances over his shoulder to give Wilhelmine an appraising glance. "A friend of yours, I take it?"
Wilhelmine: "Acquaintance. Don't get too chummy now."
Alexander: "Ah, greetings. Vlad, this is Wihelmine. We met this morning during the commotion in Salamander."
Vladislav brushes his bangs to the side. "Vladislav, as he stated. The fire seemed like a most unfortunate accident. As much as I wished to attend, I had more pressing matters to attend in the Tower of Jinn that morning."
Wilhelmine: "And likewise for me. Except vice-versa." She gives a smile utterly lacking in sincerity.
Vladislav: "Heading back home, I take it? It is getting rather late to be wandering the streets at night with sickness and hostiles roaming about."
Wilhelmine: "I'm not too concerned for my own safety, really. I think our mutual acquaintance knows that rather well."
Wilhelmine: "No, in fact, I may be looking for what trouble to tackle next."
Alexander: "She didn't back down from killing a 57 millikilogoblin monster."
[OOC] Alexander: -57 +42 log finally loaded
[OOC] Wilhelmine: 42.5
[OOC] Alexander: I wasn't being precise
Vladislav: "Is that so?" He shakes his head with a sly grin plastered on his face, arms crossed. "If you are looking for trouble, you have certainly found an avenue to experience it. I have little to offer you in terms of lucre outside of what we defeat, but more protection than Alexander here to reach my destination would be warmly welcomed."
Vladislav: "One does not waltz into Prince Snakes domain without drive or reason, however. There is a toll."
Wilhelmine: "What's the toll?"
Vladislav: "The locals call him the Snake-lives-in-his-Venom. A single bite from the Prince is your homage for entering his domain. It is said that all he has bitten he may kill at will through a simple snap of the tail."
Alexander: "That sounds inconvenient."
Vladislav: "It is rather troublesome. Should you not wish to experience it you are welcome to escort me to the border instead."
Wilhelmine: "Fortunate, however." She spreads her arms in grandiose manner. "I'm unable to be killed."
Vladislav: "Rather confident tonight, aren't we?" A small chuckle.
Alexander: "Thankfully. Like I said, it sounds rather inconvenient. What if I'm in the middle of…something?"
Wilhelmine: "Previously imprisoned in the Kuro Kuro Carceri. I believe that's proof enough."
Wilhelmine: "If you want to do anything in this world, you'll have to deal with all manner of inconveniences, sir." She keeps referring to him as 'sir.' Does she even remember Alexander's name?
Alexander: "I may have forgotten who I was talking to for the moment. Insinuating anything around you is probably a lost cause."
Vladislav: "We are also of course making the assumption that these rules are a constant and not a coincidence. With a sample size of one that is rather grandiose. Do you hold interest in the knowledge or are you simply a foolhearty thrillseeker?"
Wilhelmine: "Knowledge is what I'm after. I don't care the source."
Mana: The road to the silent Dryad gate lies ahead.
Vladislav: "For the time being then it seems we may work in tandem. Shall we be on our way? I imagine once we reach our destination finding information will be quite the time consuming task." He gestures to the intersection before offering a nod and heading towards the Dryad Gate.
Alexander follows his guide. He might get lost in there otherwise.
Wilhelmine: "Lead on."
Vladislav speaks without turning his head over his shoulder as he walks. "I am curious what changes the opening of the Shade gate will have brought if any. The order should be processed by the funeral tomorrow, I'd imagine."
Mana: The Dryad gate itself is welded shut - but a series of wooden platforms have been constructed, allowing a group to be hauled up, and descend over the other side, lifted and conveyed by a series of pulleys.
Wilhelmine: "Heh. News of that's reached your ears already? Amusing."
Mana: A wooden platform is lowered for Vladislav, someone up on the wall in a broad straw hat sees him.
Vladislav: "It is not my first choice, but I understand the concerns regarding Vush make it one of the safer options." He offers a firm nod to the man on the platform. "On to the platform. Hope you have no fear of heights."
Alexander just shakes his head slightly, stepping onto the platform.
[OOC] Vladislav: -platform +man on the wall.
Wilhelmine follows along with no protest.
Mana: The man on the wall nods to the trio, waves to someone on the other side, holds up three fingers.
Mana: After a short wait, the platform starts being hauled up.
Vladislav: "To be perfectly honest I would have preferred that something wasn't put there at the drop of a hat. To further understand the link between here and where the services are from we need to establish a point of contact. The world is falling apart at its seams, they will only find a new place to enter should we cut one off."
Mana: The view of the city in the fading evening light is incredible - the open ocean to your right, the endless horizon, marred by a single spar of ice, barely visible. To the left, the lights of Wisp are blooming, the great tower rising above it, casting itself up to the heavens, a striking sight against the slowly brightening moon.
Vladislav: "Finding such a point is one of my secondary objectives at this time."
Mana: Below, there's Tacaroon, the lake, the forests of Dryad. There's a two man team on the pull ropes, now, with Ulka as one of them - after a moment, the man on the wall switches a few wheels on the mechanism. "Alright, we'll be lowering you now."
Mana: "Came just in time, we're nigh closed up shop."
Vladislav slips his hands into his fur coat, staring off into the distance for a moment. He offers an apologetic smile to the men. "Just as planned then, I suppose. My errands took longer than expected, I'm afraid."
Wilhelmine: "You're referring to the creatures trying to come in, I take it?"
Mana: "Happens to all of us." He usher you onto the next platform, disengages a few sandbags, the platform slowly drops. Quietly refuses comment on these "creatures" .
Vladislav: "Ah, yes. You're familiar with them? They are related to the sickness though I suspect someone such as yourself wouldn't take that as a deterrent."
Wilhelmine: "One of them protested rather harshly when I filled the emptiness in the gate with something of my own."
Alexander: "Ah, so you're one of the culprits. Why the delaying tactic?"
Vladislav chuckles. "Be glad you did not have to listen to the aftermath moaning. I performed an investigation with the Court Doctor Erinee earlier today. We found what used to be a gate to the rift and quite the depressed service."
Wilhelmine: "Why not? Given everything that's occurred just in a single day, do you feel adequately prepared to face … well, anything?"
Wilhelmine: "Or it could be that I wanted to see something done and shaken up. I'm rather lacking in the Undine nature."
Wilhelmine shrugs.
Vladislav offers an apologetic nod to the men as he is lowered down. The conversation likely made little sense to them. "I do not disagree with your decision at this juncture. For the sake of curiousity however did you attempt to walk into the rift before placing something in?"
Vladislav: "Whether we may even attempt to enter where they come from is an important fact for counter attack considerations."
Wilhelmine: "Hm? Oh, no. I was testing theories that had long been talked of at the academy."
Vladislav: "Should you encounter another rift, it would be appreciated if you could experiment with this fact before severing the link."
Vladislav: "It is information that would be helpful to the court."
Wilhelmine: "Certainly. What have I to lose?
Vladislav: "I admit I am a bit curious if the venom would stay in ones system if Prince Snake chose to snap his tail. If that is the case you could lose many things as he would only need to do so as a morning routine."
Alexander: "I take it there's no known antidote?"
Wilhelmine: "A morning routine?"
Vladislav: "Snap his tail when he wakes up. You fall dead and come back the next day."
Vladislav shakes his head at Alexander. "If there was, it has likely been lost to history. Few dare to venture there in this day and age."
Wilhelmine: "Why would I come back the next day?" She glances between Alexander and Vladislav.
Vladislav: "Ah, I take it you never told her you were assassinated yesterday?"
Alexander: "Pretty sure I did, which is why she's feeling invincible, alongside whatever crazy things she's heard in the KKC."
Alexander: "But I think she means 'go back to the Prince's domain'."
Wilhelmine: "I don't recall. When I said I was unkillable, I wasn't referring to some sort of rebirth process."
Wilhelmine: "I did not. I meant 'to life.'"
Wilhelmine: "Things were sort of hectic when we fought together, and I didn't stick around for conversation long after."
Wilhelmine: "So you're saying that you died and returned?"
Vladislav: "Ah, so you're simply cocky." He offers a grin in return before shaking his head. "I suppose you can be even cockier though. The running theory is that those who encountered a sproutling will reincarnate the next morning with all their memories and belongings intact. We only have a single sample size thus far so in the worst case this venture will allow us to gather more data on that front."
Wilhelmine shrugs. "I have yet to be proven wrong. Perhaps I'm simply pressing my limits until so."
Mana: The village is quiet, at this hour. You can head into the woods at your leisure.
Mana: (But the wind over the lake is quite pleasant.)
Vladislav: "Do not pay mind to the empty streets. This hour Prince Elk is out and about. Should you hear something I suggest you avert your gaze until we leave Tacaroon. I would feel partially responsible should one of you end up cursed."
Wilhelmine: "Noted."
Alexander: "Alright."
Vladislav makes his way to the forest, shaking his head. "These things must seem odd to foreigners."
Vladislav: "Since the district has fallen out of the Emperor's favour it has been divided up among the self proclaimed princes, each with their own sets of rules and customs."
Alexander: "Overtaken by warlords. Makes sense."
Mana: Luminescent flies buzz past, swerving around the heavy, flower-laden broad leaves that droop overhead. The path is barely cut under tremendous boughs, and the road is pitted with great roots. Brushes of wildflowers, some bejeweled with thorns, sprout up, occasionally, on either side of the path.
Wilhelmine: "At least it's not complete chaos. There's still order in place of anarchy, despite the divine mandate's absence."
Vladislav: "Tacaroon is more fortunate than some. Last I heard those on Wallfast have been hit with hard times and it has been quite some time since I brought back some villagers trapped in L'Arena through the secret road."
Vladislav: "Mind the roots on the ground. These roads have not seen maintenence in quite some time and the night grows darker still."
Mana: The first encounter isn't too far into the walk: A pair of mushroom monsters, the Matango, a set of buzzing bees circling them.
Mana: One of the mushrooms eyes the approaching group warily, it jabs its tiny arm against the other, calling it to attention.
Wilhelmine tightens the straps on her wrists. "Is this an obstacle that normally needs clearing?"
Vladislav halts his stride, pulling out his book. "These are not as aggressive as a goblin, but unless we wish to take a detour they must be dealt with. Travelling off the roads of Dryad during the night is not advisable."
Alexander: "There are monsters appearing in Titania. I'm not surprised about them in a lawless district."
Mana: Clear the way, then.

Wilhelmine: "… Seriously, that's coming from me. Think about that for a moment."
Alexander: "Alright, alright."
Alexander goes to grab Vlad before making his escape. [CT 10]
Mana: Aaand… the trio dash out of the forest, back into Tacaroon!
Mana: …Phewf. That was rough.
Wilhelmine: "Well, our guide's been knocked out. Is there anywhere we can … rest?"
Alexander: "Ask the locals, or try and climb the gate."
Mana: There are lights on in a tavern. Maybe you could stop in?
Wilhelmine swings into the tavern. "Anyone willing to help a trio of morons?"
Mana: There are few people in the tavern. The barkeep, a thin, dark-skinned woman in her thirties, looks up from filling someone's mug.
Mana: "I would. Is that our Vlad, you've got?"
Alexander: "I'm assuming it's the same Vlad, yes."
Mana: "So am I. We've got a spare room up top, carry him up and I'll look him over."
Wilhelmine helps Alexander carry him up. "Appreciated. Sorry for the trouble."
Mana: A room. Two unmade beds. A dusty table. That's about it.
Mana: You hear the barkeep call out: "Cutting you off for a bit. Monster attack, I'm taking care of it."
Mana: A mumbled: "We're good for a bit, yeh."
Alexander puts Vlad down on one of the beds.
Mana: The barkeep inspects. "…Nasty beating. Stings from the local bees, but I have the antitoxins on hand."
Mana: "He's in for the night, I think."
Wilhelmine: "We didn't have any supplies on-hand. Foolish of us."
Mana: "Forest is full of monsters, you know."
Wilhelmine: "We do now."
Alexander: "At least we can learn from this experience."
Wilhelmine: "Do you need anything done in return? I hate to impose."
Wilhelmine: "Without earning my keep, that is."
[OOC] Mana: You can learn from it, by the way - got 200 EXP. Got 3 AP.
Mana: She sighs, considers. "…Ask me tomorrow, I think. These are strange times."
Wilhelmine: "Certainly are. Name's Wilhelmine, by the by."
Alexander: "Alright. Thanks. I'm Alexander."
Mana: "Adri. And thank you for looking after Vladislav."
Wilhelmine: "And likewise."
Wilhelmine looks out the door, then back at Adri. "Know anywhere we can sleep, in the meantime? We're conscious, but still roughed up all the same."
Mana: "…I'll put you up for the night. We've got another room, and another bed in here at least."
Wilhelmine: "Appreciated, Adri. Heh."
Mana: And so it was written.
